Heaslip to lead Ireland

Captain: Jamie Heaslip

Number eight Jamie Heaslip will captain Ireland during the upcoming Six Nations, with Declan Kidney naming six new caps in a 39-man squad.

Robbie Henshaw, Paddy Jackson, Ian Madigan, Paul Marshall, Dave McSharry and Lewis Stevenson are the six new faces in the squad.

Doubts over Brian O'Driscoll's fitness mean that Heaslip has been awarded the captaincy, with O'Driscoll set to play for the Ireland Wolfhounds against the England Saxons next Friday.

Munster assistant coach Anthony Foley and Leinster's Greg Feek will be part of that coaching team for the Wolfhounds game and will continue to work with the Ireland squad throughout the tournament.

"Our priority is the Wales game, but there is an opportunity in the Wolfhounds match for some of the players as we head into the Six Nations," said Ireland coach Declan Kidney.

"While the majority of our focus is on the preparations for the Wales game, the coaching staff felt it made sense to have time with the wider group of players and also to have two fully fit teams on the field ready to train after what is usually an attritional end to the group stages in Europe."

"Jamie had done a really good job for the squad and management during November and I felt that now was the correct time to do this.

"Brian has had very little rugby in the last number of months and I think he deserves the space and time to concentrate on getting himself back playing fully fit.

"We need Brian the player just as much as we need Brian the captain and typical of the man and the selfless way he has contributed to Irish Rugby and the Ireland team, he has said that the captain and the team would have his full support."

Heaslip took charge against South Africa in the absence of Brian O'Driscoll during last year's November Tests, with the latter stating his disappointment at not been handed back the captaincy armband.

"The captaincy has been a big part of my career and life over the last number of years, and while I was naturally very disappointed not to be leading the team in the Six Nations, when I talked it through with Declan I accepted the reasons behind the decision," said O'Driscoll.

"I've always known that the Rugby World Cup in 2015 was most likely a bridge too far for me, so at some point a player, who will most likely be there for the tournament, needs to build that captaincy experience. Jamie will do a fantastic job and along with the other senior players in the leadership group, I will be giving him all of the support that he needs."

"I was incredibly honoured when Declan asked me back in November to lead the team in Brian's absence," added Heaslip.

"To lead your country is the ultimate in any sport.

"To get the opportunity again, considering what an inspirational leader Brian is and the other players who could have been chosen to captain the team, is even more humbling.

"I know Brian as a team-mate and as a friend and I will be relying on his and the other players support as we head into the Championship."

Absolutely disgusted with this shoddy treatment of Ireland's greatest ever player in (probably) his last Six Nations. Could possibly understand if, under other circumstances, captaincy was being given to a chomping at the bit O'Connell or Best... But Heaslip? Very disappointed and angry.

Still no Downey? I'm amazed considering the way he plays at the mo he ought at least to be in the squad. And yet D'Arcy the farce is still in? Unfathomable.

Not to bothered about whos capt tbh,and Heslips form at least for Leinster atm has improved ,his last game he was very good for example, but he still needs to do it consistently imo.As to the squad no surprises as others have said ,but D'Arcy picked again ,when D.McSheery has to be in pole for the 12 shirt imo atm,and surly even DK has to be thinking that I.Maddigan at 12 could be a good idea, given his present form, and how it could allow Sexton a tad extra few seconds ect.The squad looks good ,now all thats needed is for Ireland to play to their potential, and do it consistently, which imothey havent done for a few years now .

It's understandable the need to rotate the captaincy now, however, looking at the squad available (As Heaslip is not the Man), there are slim pickings! Probably should have let him have one more Kidney!

Lets hope Heaslip finds his form of '09 and proves me(and many others) wrong. It's hard to see O'Gara dodging a lengthy ban, Keatly must surely replace him then! Glad to see Madigan sneak in, disappointed a couple more Connacht boys didn't get it, I believe Griffin has a lot of ability, and will probably stay loyal to the West, if he can break into the Irish squad.

Hopefully we get to see Lukey Fitz back in a green jersey doing what he does best. While heaslips form hasn't been great he's proven on the international stage and its a step for the future. Hopefully Jackson gets thrown in on the bench when the coward O'gara gets the book thrown at him. Few young names like Madigan and McShary making the squad too which is exciting. For once I'm not overly upset with the actions of Kidney the Cabbage Eater

I think Boss has been included as he's shown that he can cover centre at a pinch as well as wing. Its good to see Henshaw and McSharry get a call up. Henshaw looks like a genuine contender for the fullback spot over the next few years.

Agreed - I dont know how he is the Captain when his form has been no where near good enough to get him a starting spot on the team. Kidney Bean Strikes again.

No real surprises really glad to see theyve kept with Jamie as captain so Brian can concentrate on getting match fit, dont know why we need 4 scrumhalves though surely Marshall is ahead of Boss, I have a feeling the back up 10 will be Jackson for at least the first match as ROG has got a suspension coming. Anyway a few big names on the injury list but still enough quality there to win some games and some youngsters to push the old boys.
