Excuse me I worded that very badly, if being really tall is a criteria for a test level lock it should not be in the top 10.

Paul Marshall should not only be starting this game but also be considered for the lions, he's a brilliant footballer and can do things many other nines can't; create tries for himself.

Sorry mate Toner is not anywhere close to test level. No grunt in him at all, and being really tall in the lineout should not be in the top ten wish list for an international lock, take that away from him and I cant see any stand out facets to the guys play.

Marzie. Heaslip carried the ball twice into contact vs Sa i dont say drop him i say he shouldnt be in the squad. He needs a wake up call as he isnt a relation to a number8

To be honest I dont think Murray has been all that bad! Reddan has shown that he is much more of a liability in the green jersey, although for this match I really do wish marshall was starting! Also I feel that all this Earls negativity is completely unwarranted! He hasn't underperformed lately, he has shown that he is a quality player not only in the red but in the green too! Im happy with Marshall starting but I would love to someday ( maybe not yet) see himself and JJ Hanrahan (at 12) competing for place kicking duties! To be honest I dont fully trust sexton to do so as he has been so poor in a green jersey, that said, if he gives us the performances he's capable of giving; bring on the selection headaches!!

Marshall for Murray and Bent for Ross -then I'd be happy. Playing Mike Ross - pretty much our most important player due to the scarcity of proven replacements - in such a game is tempting the devil.

Oh my god ,just what does Kidney think his doing??Its an Ireland XV not Ireland so no caps and non test, and still P.Marshal cant get a game start, and DOC still gets a game rather than Toner.I just give up ,not going to hope Ireland win any games this series, because its just to depressing .

Thanks for that Willy was wondering why this was not capped.

Yep the most encouraging selection by Kidney and the fact that the game isnt capped just shows how much rankings fear dictate Kidneys conservative style in these international tests. So he would rather play within a tight strategy to avoid defeat and die wondering about what might have been. He'll watch this, and perhaps Cave plays brilliantly grabs a brace or a hatrick and Kidney will think jaysus hes not bad I must give him another crack at it next June and we'll see if he can repeat it.

Agree with the Murray comments. Still think ye are all being a bit hard on Earls at 13. Is he really the stand out bad performer in a green jersey lately lads?

Heaslip, agree, drop him, if he has what it takes he will wake up pull head and finger out and play some bloody rugby. Murray is just not great, but we all know what Heaslip can do when he applies himself, which is the greater crime?

@Willy

If you are correct about why this game is not a test match, then we really have entered a low point in international rugby, where sponsors run the game!

I despair.

Hanrahan should be starting at 12 for Ireland, Hendersen not far off and Marmian also should be there supporting Marshall, Cave has been better than Darcy for years and Mcfadden is also far better than darcy

Think how the actions of this coach will effect some young players namely madigan... i can except jackson deserves his chance he has playes really well for ulster and starts all there big games and is a great prospect to build for the future but to not even have madigan in the full squad let alone match day squad must have an effect of a young players confidence.

Luke Marshall has obviously impressed the management team in the few games he's played but once again it just goes to show that Kidney doesn't pick on form since a guy who doesn't play cant be said to be in form. I think McSharry has been in outstanding form all season scoring two great tries against Leinster and Quins. Other than him I think Hanrahan has showed more than Marshall in his performances in the under 20 WC and his man of the match performance for Munster in the Rabo starting at 12. Downey has been a big let down and Darcy and Wallace are past it.

It's great to see so many Ulster players in the 23!

It's a real shame P Marshall isn't on from the start. Jackson plays well with quick ball and sadly, as others have mentioned, Murry isn't quite there in that department. I'll look forward to his introduction later in the game.

Great to see L Marshall in the side. His distribution skills are very good and he will provide an excellent link between Jackson and Gilroy. I understand peoples concern about playing a man who hasn't nailed that position with his club, however Anscombe does rotate his squad very well - Hence Ulster's success this season.

About time Darran Cave got an oppourtunity. His running lines are very good and he's defensively sound. It's a real shame Lewis Stevenson is injured at present as I would love to have seen him alongside Touhy in the second row.

Roger Wilson can't be that far away...

Looking at the current pool of players Ireland have and considering the injuries and age profile to Best, BOD, O'Connell, Ferris, O'Brien and Kearney I can see this being another lean season. The fact is that the replacements are either not good enough or too inexperienced.

It will be impossible to replace BOD, he is a once in a generation player. Having said that I really cannot see Earls or Cave for that matter as international standard 13s. It is such an important position and in terms of defensive organisation, distribution and rugby nous these two just aren't up to it. Earls is a winger he does not have the bulk or organizational clout to front it. Cave has bulk but lacks everything else, he's a good provincial player.

I think Kidney or whoever replaces him should look at the next tier of emerging players, guys like Michael Allen, Henshaw, Griffin and O'Malley.

Its an Ireland XV and not Ireland because this is not a test game and players will not get a cap for this match.

The reason for this is when the IRFU sold the naming rights of Lansdowne Rd to Aviva part of the deal was all home test matchs over the next 20 yrs had to be played in the Aviva Stadium.

The IRFU wanted to move this game to a provincial gound and fill it as it would be far better than a 30-40% capacity in Lansdowne. I understand and agree with the IRFU in moving the game but the downside is its not a test match.

In term of selection, I agree with everything thats already been said about Paul Marshall maybe he did accidently sit on Kidneys favourite hamster Mr Nibble's.

Wouldn't have Heaslip or DOC in the team would rather Henderson in the second row and maybe Rhys Ruddock and Doughall in the back row.

Don't see how luke marshall can be picked when he can't make the Ulster team would move McFadden to 12 and play O'Hallrahan/D. Kearny/O'Dea or Conway on the wing.

Agree with the comments on starting Murray. Absolutely nothing to be gained there, Paul Marshall should be given his chance end of.

Glad to see Cave get his chance to shine, but not exactly sure what Marshall has done to merit a start. He's not even making the Ulster side is he? Same goes for Hurley, don't think hes international class at all. Can see Gilroy doing well, but overall, don't like the backline at all.

Henderson is a superb prospect, Kilcoyne looks good too, so looking forward to seeing them in action. I'd expect them both to do well. Muldoon has been a great servant, but don't think hes a 7.

The Fijians aren't renowned for their scrummaging, so surely Ross should've been rested so we could have a proper look at Bent.

Hopefully Jackson gets some game time, we are in bad need of a good backup 10 (I would still have Madigan but perhaps that's my Leinster bias) as if all ROG can offer Ireland anymore is a ridiculous kick over to top to nobody on 81 minutes it is time that he steps down.

and Murray still starts.... O dear lord Jesus. Why does phallus head kidney insist on breaking highly effective 9-10 axis' to accommodate for this useless toad?

Happy with the rest of those selections. I reckon Dave Kearney might have got a bench spot had he been back from injury longer.
