Ireland alternative black kit

New look: Ireland's alternate strip

Ireland have launched a new alternate jersey which will be worn for the first time in their November Test series opener against South Africa at the Aviva Stadium on November 10.

Developed in consultation with Irish International players and management, the striking black and green alternate jersey marks a new departure from the traditional white and green alternate strip and will be the first non-white alternate jersey to be worn by the Irish Rugby team in a competitive match.

"With South Africa coming to town the launch of a new Ireland alternate jersey gives us an opportunity to bring some variety to how we present the Irish rugby brand," said IRFU Commercial & Marketing Director Padraig Power.

"We think the new green and black jersey looks fantastic. The style is contemporary and innovative and the team really love the look. Our feedback from supporters has been very positive and we expect it to look really strong on the pitch. We think our supporters will be delighted with it and they will wear it with pride."

As an Irish fan, I don't like it... I think its disrespectful, I also think it paints a bad image for Irish Rugby. We are not the AB's, and by no means are we as good as them.

The IRFU really need to sort itself out. Get rid of this and Kidney, then maybe they might see some improvements in International ticket sales.

Get over it guys, England got stick for wearing and ALL Black jersey and shorts, this is an alternate jersey to sell a few more. Not like we have a new away strip every year or are going to a world cup in a country with a carbon copy of their kit!

Oh and Ire v SA games one team always wears the alternate strip!

What a black day this has been with this announcement. I can see the black clouds brewing as they announce the inevitible storm. s just another Or is this just another black mark against a NH side. How is it that black is suddenly such a popular colour ? Perhaps its an all black welcome to Ireland for their new found prop who although having a maternal grandmother was still a prop not rated in those all black islands in the South Pacific. as is said by many flattery is the lowest form of wit. So yes a very black day for Ireland.

Unless there is an upcomming Ireland vs Lithuania/Zimbabwe match that I haven't spotted they are only going to need this against South Africa who play in a dark green colour, so why have they picked a colour arguably closer to that?

I didn't like the England black kit, but at least it didn't clash with Argentina/Fiji etc. White has always worked for Ireland, but hey, they need to sell some kits, hurrah for the professional era!

I can't believe they've copied the England kit - where is their sense of national pride?! A black jersey should only ever be worn by England and this is an absolute disgrace.

All Irish people in the world, their fore-fathers and decendents should be rounded up and culled for such an afront.

just looked at the pics of the full kit and i quite like it the green panels under the arm look good. at least they will actually wear this one i remember about 2 years ago they brought out this horrible light blue alternate jersey and by looking at the fixtures you knew they would never wear it, it was just another way to scam money from supporters.

That's not black... that's charcoal at best. Charcoal and white and green. Hardly like the all-black copying England.

But it's still black enough for the Springboks to imagine they're playing the All Blacks and giving it that extra edge... ;)

Ireland don't seem to get the same bashing about a black shirt as England did, although admittedly they didn't go as far as putting Maori designs on it. I'm all for a bit of variation in international away shirts, everyone seemed to have white away shirts that all just looked the same. You might all think I'm mad here but does Ireland's shirt really clash with South Africa's or is it a marketing ploy to get more shirts sold? Surely the very light and very dark greens aren't that alike?

Looks ok but in respect to tradition, for what that's worth, would prefer to have seen a little more green, obviously has to differ from their #1 jersey, but seeing this one it doesn't say 'Ireland' to me. Not overly different from the Nike one worn by England last year with O2 sponsorship. Doesn't matter, on with the game.
