Les Kiss is Australian. Man, they sure can whinge, can't they?!

As for DC's first attempt, fingers to the ball constitutes charge down I believe so and the ref called it like that out loud so that the players knew they were not offside even though they were ahead of the kick.

hey blametheref maybe you should have a look at all the rugby laws that relate to the situation before commenting and exposing you lack of knowledge about the game.

In relation to kicks in general play,

11.3 (c) Intentionally touches ball. When an opponent intentionally touches the ball but does not catch it, the offside player is put onside.

Thus the AB's were not offside. Hope this helped you figure it out!! Anyone that's played rugby knows that if the ball is partially charged down by the opposition, that then allows you to play at the ball even if you were/ are in front of the kicker.

I'd also like Les Kiss' opinion on the two year AMI Stadium ban given to the half-time streaker (21-year-old Christchurch woman ) in that second test.

She was locked up and spent a night in the cells at the central police station.

I can't be sure if any advantage was gained, but perhaps this should be looked at further.

While Les Kiss's comments are daft, there is one change that might be considered:

If a missed dropped goal results in the ball going directly over the dead ball line, then a scrum is awarded to the defending side at the point where the ball was kicked (as is the case with other kicks from hand).

Blametheref;

would they only be onside after a kick if they were in the process of retiring immediately before??

blametheref, the AB players were put onside because Ireland played the ball.

@blametheref

You're ommitted the last clause in that rule and that is the an opposition player deliberately touches the ball. A charge down is deliberate. However from watching it again the New Zealnd forwards ran forward as soon as he went for the kick, before he actually kicked it and before it was touched. so yeah technically they were offside.

Still the main reason any of this happend was a poor decision to go for the penalty 6 minutes earlier. They should have kicked for the corner. Run down the clock, they had them under pressure. They may have got over for a try, got a closer penalty which was more certain or set themselves up for a drop goal leaving New Zealand little time to come back.

I don't agree with Les Kiss on this one either. O'Brien charged it down, if he hadn't made contact it might have gone over. He should have kept his mouth shut. Queitly querying decsissions has worked before. That narrow defeat to France two years ago when the IRB admitted 3 of the penalties they scored from were not penalties and another one was actually a penalty to Ireland. The ref in the next game was much more sure about his calls. Similarly i'm sure they're questioning the scrum penalty awarded for wheeling when clearly new zealand broke their binds before any wheeling.

Looking forward to the scrums next week.

Ireland played really well and could and really should closed the game out once Dagg was sin binned which they failed to do... New Zealand got themselves into the right position and closed the game at the death. The timing of the drop goal comments smacks of sour grapes in my opinion.

Kiss it Les.

You should be criticising the Welsh fool Owens - he was the one that cost us the match.

11.3 BEING PUT ONSIDE BY OPPONENTS

In general play, there are three ways by which an offside player can be put onside by an action of the opposing team. These three ways do not apply to a player who is offside under the 10-Metre Law.

(a) Runs 5 metres with ball. When an opponent carrying the ball runs 5 metres, the offside player is put onside.

(b) Kicks or passes. When an opponent kicks or passes the ball, the offside player is put onside.

(c) Intentionally touches ball. When an opponent intentionally touches the ball but does not catch it, the offside player is put onside

@blametheref you can see that part (c) explains why the offside players were put onside by the attempted chargedown

To be fair, he isn't complaining about the ref's decision, everyone knows why the scrum was awarded. And regarding the All Black players being offside, there is no offside after a kick is charged down.

That said, I do understand what he is saying about an improvement to the rule. If a kick is charged down but the ball goes over the try line, then, personally, I agree that the benefit should go to the defending team and a drop out should be awarded, otherwise it effectively gives 2 chances to score for the kicker, either the drop goal, or if it's partially charged.

Regarding the comment about a hand deflecting it through the posts, how is that managed? If it's touched at all, is it classed as missing, or only if it changes the kick from missing to scoring (if so, how on earth is that decided at amateur level)?

Does he want it to apply retroactively? Really stupid suggestion.

Is Les Kiss an Australian because he sure is whinning like one, how about losing graciously even though I have to admit I thought Ireland played better on the night but hey just like the ABs when the lose they had opportunities to close the game out earlier in the match......

Great idea, also perhaps when a side scores more than 3 tries in a half, any more will only gain 1 point each.

That way Ireland would have had more chance in the 1st game as well??????

What nonsence.

The converse of the rule in this case is that, had the ball been deflected between the posts by an Irish hand, the goal would not count. Does he want to change that too?

11.8 PUTTING ONSIDE A PLAYER RETIRING DURING A RUCK, MAUL, SCRUM OR LINEOUT

When a ruck, maul, scrum or lineout forms, a player who is offside and is retiring as required by Law remains offside even when the opposing team wins possession and the ruck, maul, scrum or lineout has ended. The player is put onside by retiring behind the applicable offside line. No other action of the offside player and no action of that player's team mates can put the offside player onside.

If the player remains offside the player can be put onside only by the action of the opposing team. There are two such actions:

Opponent runs 5 metres with ball. When an opponent carrying the ball has run 5 metres, the offside player is put onside. An offside player is not put onside when an opponent passes the ball. Even if the opponents pass the ball several times, their action does not put the offside player onside.

Opponent kicks. When an opponent kicks the ball, the offside player is put onside.
