All Blacks: Deny Irish at the death

Ireland turned up the heat in freezing conditions to push New Zealand all the way, before eventually succumbing to a 22-19 defeat in Christchurch on Saturday.

With the scores level at 19-19 and one minute remaining in the match, All Blacks pivot Dan Carter broke Irish hearts with a last-gasp drop goal to win the game and the series.

It was a valiant effort from the visitors, who led the world champions by one point (9-10) at half-time, but were left playing catch-up following an early try to Aaron Smith two minutes after the break.

But the men in green managed to claw their way back and when All Blacks full-back Israel Dagg was yellow-carded in the 72nd minute, Ireland were presented with a golden opportunity to retake the lead from 49m out.

However, Jonathan Sexton's attempt had the direction but not the distance as the ball fell agonisingly short. From there the hosts put themselves into a position to set up Carter for the match-winning drop.

His first attempt off his right boot, however, clipped an Irish hand and sailed wide. But Carter wouldn't miss the second attempt, and this time - off his left foot - sent the ball between the sticks.

Jubilation for the All Blacks, heartbreak for the brave Irish.

Declan Kidney's troops had promised they would up the intensity after being run off the park a week ago and they were certainly true to their word as the visitors - roared on by dozens of Irish fans - threatened to snaffle their first-ever Test win over the All Blacks in their 26th attempt.

Ireland supporters would have been choking on their Guinness after looking at the scoreboard to see the visitors 10-0 ahead in the opening quarter of the match thanks to an early try from Conor Murray and the boot of Sexton.

Ireland made the most of an early line-out close to New Zealand's line with brilliant effect, mauling the ball superbly before Murray - despite having no blindside support - made a dart to get the ball over for the try. Sexton added the conversion and nine minutes later he added his first penalty.

The All Blacks were able to put their first points on the board through a Carter penalty in the 21st minute. As in the first Test, Ireland went off the boil when the game headed into the second quarter and as New Zealand's intensity grew, the home side forced errors at the breakdown. This allowed Carter to add two more three-pointers that closed the gap even further.

The number ten had a chance to put his team in front on the stroke of half-time, but his fourth penalty attempt didn't have the legs and allowed Ireland to head into the half-time sheds 10-9 ahead.

That lead lasted just two minutes after the resumption before Smith grabbed his first Test try after a burst from Sonny Bill Williams. Williams crashed into the Ireland pack and as the All Blacks piled in, their livewire scrum-half was driven over the line for the try that Carter duly converted.

Any thoughts that the floodgates might open as they did in Auckland seven days ago, were dispelled as Ireland rallied with Sexton adding his second penalty in another strong attacking period that had the All Blacks scrambling to make try-saving tackles.

But with that storm weathered, the momentum again swung the other way and Carter's fourth penalty extended New Zealand's lead to 19-13.

Ireland then came back with two more Sexton penalties levelling the scores to set up a dramatic finale.

Pressure mounted on New Zealand as Adam Thomson joined Kieran Read on the injured list, leaving them only two specialist loose forwards. Dagg's sin-binning for a late charge on Rob Kearney didn't help matters either for the hosts.

But at 19-all and a man down, the All Blacks rallied one last time and fittingly, Carter - a Canterbury local - was there to hold his nerve and seal the outcome.

Man of the match: For New Zealand, Dan Carter was obviously the man of the moment thanks to his match-winning drop-goal. But it's hard to look past the gallant Irish who silenced their critics with a superb effort that came within fractions of the most famous Irish win in history against the world champions. And it's for that reason why we've opted for a collective award to the entire Ireland team.

Moment of the match: With 40 seconds of the match remaining, it has to be Carter's winning drop goal.

Villain of the match: Israel Dagg's brain implosion that so nearly cost his team defeat.

Mighty ABs mighty close to losing 2 of their last 3 test matches... Superb contest tonight. Great to watch as a neutral. McCaw almost too knackered at the end for the interviews. You've got to love these 3 test series :-)

Gaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!

The NZ try was very typical of the ideal NZ attack. Poor low clearance kick to the back three under no pressure. How many times have we seen NZ score tries from that sort of turnover ball. It's why they scored so many tries last week.

The decision to kick the penalty at goal rather than go for touch is an arguable one. It's very easy to say this while sitting at home on a sofa, but considering Carter had missed one from a similar range earlier and the time on the clock, with our lineout performing well, might it not have been smarter to go for touch and keep the ball in the NZ 22.

Gutted but overall happy I guess

Lot's of people talking about arrogance, no humility and cheats. You go on and on baiting like small minded wind up merchants. We should have won the ABs are cheats, world champions haha, and on it goes like everyone else are choir boys... get over yourselves! bitter and twisted much... If we score more points we win! Ireland played well but the ABs won, and all the accusations and innuendos in the world will never change anything, read about it in the papers tomorrow and weep.

All Blacks played poorly, Ireland played well, but the All Blacks still won - class always comes through. Hard luck Ireland. A kick in the arse for the AB's by Hansen and co who will be livid with that shitty performance! Expect a complete All Black performance in Hamilton and you guest it another emphatic All Black win! 107 more years.....

To macte who asked "What would NZ be without Carter?" ummmmm... how about WORLD CHAMPIONS!!! buddy! Did you not watch the World Cup?

To curates_egg accusing the AB's of gouging...you obviously missed Ireland's own idiot forwards knee then kick their own while trying to clean out. Justifies all the Irish jokes I say ;)

Firstly well done to the ABs, I suppose that is why they are world champs.

I take great issue with anyone who believes that scrum call for a whip-wheel was correct because they have no idea about scrums. Ireland had a huge ascendancy over the AB scrum in the second half and when Ireland tried to get the left hand side up(loose head) Franks buckled and ended up on skis. Nigel gives a penalty to the ABs...awful call! Net result is the ABs clear 50metres and end up with 2 shots at a Drop goal in the last 2mins.

Ireland should be incredibly proud of that effort, without Ferris, POC, Bowe as well. But they need to back it up next week and put the ABs in the same uncomfortable position they were tonight.

Also when Ireland had a scrum on their own 10m line and were pushing through, the ABs dropped the scrum...Best was understandably perplexed to say the least. Nigel Owens response...."im sorry, I was looking at the ball at the 8's feet". Considering the touchy was 7 yards away what was he looking at? They are all but spectators being paid to watch the game!

All in all, prob the best test match I've seen for a long time. I hope Ireland get what they deserve next week...a win

Knew we were in trouble when I read on PRLive that "The All Blacks give a powerful rendition of the 'Kama Te' haka!"... reserving judgement on how lucky we were to get away with the win until I've had a chance to watch it but regardless, well played Ireland.

Well done to the Irish they played an awesome game!

Had my feet up the whole game as I never thought the AB's were ever going to lose that....

Sad thing is that's probably the best the Irish are ever going to play against them. I don't see them backing that up with a repeat performance next week. Predicting a cricket score for the AB's next week as they don't play two shockers in a row...

I think the pivotial moment of the match was about the 73rd minute, NZ were trapped in their own half and had a defensive scrum. Ireland go for the drive and Heally is harshly penalised for wheeling the scrum. NZ clear and from the ensuing lineout the All Black machine suddenly clicks and work the ball up to the Irish line, eventually manufacturing the winning drop goal. Sure the Irish were unlucky with the penalty but you have to admire the All Blacks ability to work the score when they need it. Hopefully we get a simular game next week!

Great game! Well done Ireland, well done All Blacks.

Great spirit and commitment. Ireland took game to NZ with relentless pressure - that's how you rattle sides. Almost worked!

Great composure in the end, in the face of errors, ferocious tackling, smashing bodies to sink the late droppie.

Next week will also be a classic!

I'm an All Blacks fan through and through haven't missed watching a game since the mid 80s. To be fair we probably should have lossed tonight. But we didn't. You can call us cheats, rugby is all about cheating without getting caught. But there's cheating and there is cheating. For instance taking out players at rucks is cheating, but the refs don't seem to care. However eye gouging is beyond cheating anyone caught doing this should be banned for a year. All Blacks play hard and sometimes cross the line with high tackles and late shots. But they don't eye gauge! O'Driscoll wasn't eye gouged he was hit in a high tackle by Smith and then got a knee in the face by his own support player. You can hate us as is your right, but don't let that get in the way of the facts. Also take a look at the treatment McCaw got to get his facial in a Irish rolling maul! The sad thing is the only way Ireland will get better is by playing Southern teams more, Ireland won't be back in NZ for 10 years. Glad they didn't win though, probably make a film about it. NZ need to bring back some more experience like Nonu & Vito and sadly Ali has reached the end. Plus McCaw at the back of the scrum doesn't work, he's not pushing he acts like a flanker headup waiting to breakoff. Really doesn't help when the scrum is going backwards! Interesting to see what happens next week. Lot of new players at the moment, will give everyone a chance for a while.

I'm happy to see a lot of Irish fans taking the loss on the chin, you are a proud bunch & your graciousness is appreciated.

You guys didn't deserve to lose & I know it's going to be tough to take.

To all the people calling the AB's cheats for no reason, shame on you. That was a fair win.

papachinzo says... they beat the All Blacks in every area.

well no they did not. Points is the obvious area. they also give away penalties to stop trys, the obrien penalty at 60min was classic deliberate to stop a try 5m from line.

Next week, another chance. This was a equal-best loss since 1992. Still a loss. BOD must get fed up with after match interview this was 13th time he has lost to NZ. As i say next week another chance. More points.

without Read the ABs look average on defence and thru the forwards. That was the most telling thing for me- his abscence, also Richie made a lot of mistakes some at crucial times in the game when the ABs were on attcak and had some momentum. Richie needs to stay out of most of the attacking moves these days
