Big mistake with Nonu...

I don't know which year's Super Rugby you were watching, but I watched every single game this year... and when Nonu wasn't injured he was dishing up no-show after no-show...

It was only in his last couple of games that he started to show flashes of his usual form... but only at the World Cup did he step up and play great rugby again.

So I am perplexed by your selection of him. But even more perplexed by you omission of the player that SHOULD'VE been there...

SONNY BILL WILLIAMS (remember him?) was without a doubt the man of the tournament. He created nothing short of a revolution - other players started trying to immitate him left right and centre... Fans of OTHER TEAMS started speaking of him in the same breath as Jonah Lomu... He was BY FAR the best inside centre of the tournament... and at the World Cup he created a little bit of magic every time he was on the field... Yet he is not even MENTIONED on your list..!?

For that little omission alone your list is invalid.

the time of year for 'best of' lists, and here's the Australian rugby media's international team of the year for 2011:

15 Dagg, 14 O'Connor, 13 Smith, 12 Roberts, 11 Ioane, 10 Carter, 9 Genia, 8 Read, 7 McCaw, 6 Dusautoir, 5 Nallet, 4 Thorn, 3 O Franks, 2 Servat, 1 Woodcock

Subs: 16 du Plessis, 17 A Jones, 18 Matfield, 19 O'Brien, 20 Phillips, 21 Nonu, 22 Beale.

Generous of the Australians to have 8 NZers in the starting XV, one more in the subs.

@spudsandgravey - I sense someone with rose tinted spectacles! I had been a fan of Ashton's, but lets be honest, he's had somewhere between a poor and an awful year! Just remember his lack of effort against the Scarlets - a truly rubbish performance!

To all you Ashton haters..........get over it. He's in because he is a try machine. What else do you want from your winger? Remember all of you, teams of the year are always subjective so dry your eyes fans of France, Wales and S Africa.

Great debate on many positions and some tough choices that can go in one of many ways, except one........Chris Ashton. I can think of 10 wingers that would be well ahead of him. He is not in the same class as all the other players being discussed.

Ashton instead of Clerc? Castrogiovani instead of Mas? The IRB player of the year ignored? So your hatred for the French knows no limits?

Ashton selection is a complete joke, and I suspect thrown in to wind up the PR fans. He is not in the top 10 wingers in the world, never mind the best. The average French prop would be a better winger (and less of a sex pest!)

The back row should be Dusatoir, McCaw and Parisse. Can't understand any other choice for this.

Not that convinced about Conrad Smith - there are better centres about than him (in NZ for a start). Plus he is an idiot. Not sure why QC gets such a hard time - he is charming compared to CS.

Parra is best scrum half about - just a shame he was at 10 instead (even if he did do a grand job). He has a far more complete game than Genia (at the moment) and Mike Phillips is just a poor mans Joost.

And lastly (with a bit of bias perhaps) what about Danie Rossouw? Surely the form second row at the world cup?

There should be more French players! Agree with no boks being included. I wish Bizzy got more game time though. He would have def put a SA name on that list.

Ashton - please... I can think of a good 5/6 other players who would run circles around that clown. The only thing good about him is the youtube replays of him getting KO'd :D

The lack of French and Welsh players is unbelievable. Jamie Roberts on form is easily the outstanding centre in the game. Dusautoir missing is shocking (only Warburton is a realistic rival at the moment, as Pocock really didnt do much this year). Clerc or North on the wing any day of the week instead of Ashton.

I like the sound of Gorgodze Kaino Dusautoir as a back row. I really dont think Gorgodze gets enough credit, if you ask any Frenchman who watches domestic league, they all rate him incredibly highly, and he had a brilliant world cup. So many phenomenal players in world rugby at the moment, hard to argue with the XV chosen. Servat and B.DuPlessis push Mealamu hard at hooker, and would struggle to put any Englishmen in there (with deep regret!)

the most important player is of course bryce lawrence -kept SA off the precious kiwi`s - seems to me this was written by a kiwi -- my crystal ball heats up when I say `carter` to it ---

Tri-nats

Cooper? Yeah Sure!

Mate the only thing he should be awarded is "Sidestepper of the year" like when he delibrately stood aside to let Nonu score under the posts which almost cost Aus the game. Now that wasn't at Eden park was it? Ha!

Merry Xmas

Wow, a lot of Hatred for Chris Ashton in the comments. I don't personally think he's the best winger of the year, but I do believe he's good and can rightfully be thought of in the discussion for the player of his year in this position. Personally, George North, Vincent Clerc, O' Connor (just) and despite a quiet year by his standards possibly Tommy Bowe... A disclaimer, however, I didn't see much of Cory Jane, what I did see was impressive but didn't catch much super rugby this year.

Lawes seems to have a bad reputation, personally I think he's a hard player who plays on the edge of the rules (like a McCaw, or Kaino). Probably wouldn't have put him here just yet but the potential...

Finally, I feel the smaller nations have once again got the rough end of the stick, Richie Gray, Gorgodze (spl?) and Parisse would be in my selection at least on the bubbling under level.

One last thing, we would do well to remember it is all on opinion. I'm sure we could all argue for people to go into this team for a number of reasons, it's not the end of the world and all that...

APV1 says...

@ crunchfit - Hear! Hear! And considering the more recent examples of knees to people which have gone unpunished, I'm still of the opinion the Lawes is a hard but fair player. Much is made of his disciplinary record, but I'm not aware of it being particulalry bad. As a player he tackles hard and often later than some others, but I'm not aware of him being penalised a great deal for illegal play, nor for being cited very often.

@Pinky - I'm sure Ben7 didn't call for the inclusion of all of the players he mentioned, he was just highlighting the players that did perform for the Boks.

A strong case can be made for Matfield and Bismark as best players in their position, but everyone has different criteria on how people qualify for their team. Both of them had stellar seasons in my opinion.

I like the look of the team although I would prefer Parisse, McCaw and Dusatoir. Bluddy good backline
