Eyeing recruits: Phil Davies

Cardiff Blues boss Phil Davies wants to sign up to six players ahead of next season, and retain Wales duo Sam Warburton and Leigh Halfpenny.

With Welsh rugby still in the throes of a "civil war" between the WRU and the four regions, and star names leaving the country for England and France, Davies is keen to secure the services of new recruits.

In addition, the director of rugby places great value on keeping hold of British and Irish Lions pair Warburton and Halfpenny.

Strong rumours suggest Davies is poised to make a move for Scarets back-row Josh Turnbull, as flanker Andries Pretorius is set to leave the Arms Park for Worcester at the end of the season.

Alex Cuthbert will be staying at the Blues until the end of the 2015/16 season, however, giving fans due cause for optimism that the unresolved futures of the two Lions and others will be in Wales.

"We've got to keep working through trying to keep our best players and also trying to recruit some quality players as well," Davies told the BBC.

"We're lucky. We've got a huge turnaround in players, but we're trying now to actively keep as many as we possibly can because we've got a lot of quality, young players.

"And [we] particularly [want] keep our top players, and then and add four or five, six players on top of what we've got.

"We've got to keep nurturing and building and improving what we've got as well as getting quality on top.

"And keeping Leigh and Sam is vital."
