Jonathan Davies: Leaving Scarlets

Clermont on Tuesday confirmed the signing of Scarlets and Wales centre Jonathan Davies on a two-year deal from July 2014.

The British and Irish Lion's contract with the West Wales region runs out at the end of the season, and the Top 14 giants have pounced to secure his signature.

Davies sustained a chest injury against South Africa on Saturday which will keep him out of Wales' remaining November Tests.

But the 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal that will run until 2016, with the option of a further year's extention.

The centre was made Scarlets skipper at the start of this season, and becomes the latest Welsh stalwart to make the cross-channel switch, following James Hook, Lee Byrne, Jamie Roberts, Dan Lydiate and Luke Charteris.

Clermont's sporting director, Jean-Marc Lhermet, was thrilled with the wealthy French outfit's latest acquisition.

"His profile fits perfectly to the game we play and he will bring us a lot," said Lhermet.

"Despite his young age, he has a huge experience of top level matches and is one of the world's best players in his position.

"He will be an asset to our team.

"Jonathan decided to leave Wales for a new adventure, and we are happy that he'll be playing in yellow and blue.

"We're sure that his class and determination will help us win new trophies in the years to come."

Davies joins what is an already illustrious Clermont squad, and faces competition for a starting berth in the centres with the likes of Aurelien Rougerie, Welsey Fofana, Regan King and Benson Stanley.
