Speculation: Mike Phillips

Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips has been suspended by Bayonne, after earlier reports in France suggested he had been sacked.

Reports in the Welsh media have stated that Phillips' future at the club will now be decided over the next 48 hours.

Phillips landed in hot water earlier this week after attending a video analysis session under the influence of alcohol along with Kiwi team-mates Stephen Brett and Dwayne Haare

The British and Irish Lions scrum-half moved to France following the 2011 Rugby World Cup, after four years with the Ospreys.

Phillips has been involved in previous off-field incidents, including last season with Bayonne when he was given a one-match suspension. He was also disciplined by Wales in 2011 after a late-night incident outside a fast-food restaurant in Cardiff, which saw him suspended indefinitely from the squad's World Cup preparations.

The initial report of Phillips' possible sacking came from Midi Olympique.

Bayonne issued a statement later on Thursday denying any decision had been made on the future of Phillips, whilst also attacking Midi Olympique and it's website, for "deliberately trying to destabalise the club on the eve of an important match."

"So far no decision has been made regarding the recent facts reported by the press," said the club.

Bayonne host Montpellier in the Top 14 on Friday and Phillips has been left out of the matchday 22, although Brett will start the game at fly-half and Haare has been named on the bench.

Phillips, who had not commented on the matter since the news of the alleged disciplinary issued was reported on Monday, broke his silence on Twitter on Thursday.

"Sorry to all the fans of Bayonne for this situation, I agree wholeheartedly with the team for tomorrow night. good luck," he tweeted.
