Australia: Steal win from Wales

Australia's replacement pivot Mike Harris killed off Wales' hopes of keeping their Test series alive after slotting a last-gasp penalty kick to steal a 25-23 win in Melbourne.

It was a sad case of close but no cigar for the Welsh who came within seconds of winning Down Under for the first time in 43 years and set up a series decider.

However, Harris - on for Berrick Barnes - was called upon to provide the killer blow for the Wallabies after a maul was ruled to have been dragged down and Australia's New Zealand-born super sub didn't disappoint.

The defeat left a devasted Wales outfit once again reflecting on a golden chance gone begging in a thrilling encounter that saw the lead change hands nine times as the match went down to the wire.

The visitors showed their trademark fighting spirit at Etihad Stadium but the loss meant a series victory for Australia, who took out the first Test in Brisbane last week.

Wales got off to a the perfect start, launching a sustained attack after just three minutes which ended when wing George North side-stepped past Wycliff Palu and Rob Simmons to touch down.

Leigh Halfpenny kicked the easy conversion but the hosts went on to have the better of the half and Barnes kicked a pair of penalties to reduce their deficit to 7-6.

The diminuitive fly-half then made a crucial break on the stroke of half-time after slicing through a large gap between Sam Warburton and Ashley Beck, before coolly finding Rob Horne on his shoulder and the centre cruised over the line.

Barnes added the extras to make it a seven-pointer and the Welsh trailed 13-7 at the break.

However, the tourists once again started the better of the two sides after Ashley Beck and Jonathan Davies combined to show off their soccer skills by hacking the ball downfield when Will Genia's pass went astray.

Beck hit the deck, but Davies got a favourable bounce and calmly collected the ball near the line to score. Halfpenny once again added the extras and Wales were back in front (13-14).

Barnes booted a pair of three-pointers either side of a Halfpenny penalty and Australia were clinging to a 19-17 lead, but they then lost wing Cooper Vuna to the sin-bin for tackling Halfpenny in the air.

The Welsh full-back kicked the resulting penalty to put his side up 20-19 but the Wallabies went straight onto the attack and Barnes made it 22-20 when Wales infringed at a ruck.

The see-saw battle continied when the reliable Halfpenny was on target once again when Ben Alexander was penalised at a scrum 13 minutes from time before Barnes - who had been struggling with a leg injury - then put a kick wide of the posts with six minutes left.

But the Wallabies got another chance when, with the 80 minutes having elapsed, Richard Hibbard infringed at a driving maul, and Harris calmly stepped up to drill a tricky penalty straight through the uprights.

Man of the match: For Wales, Leigh Halfpenny kept his side in the hunt thanks to a flawless kicking display and perhaps would've been awarded this gong had Wales won. However, the official man of the match award went to new dad Berrick Barnes and it's hard to argue against it. Australia's number ten set up the Wallabies' only try of the match and contributed 17 points before being replaced.

Moment of the match: We're pretty sure every pub in Wales now have a picture of Mike Harris on the bullseye of their dartboards following the replacement's match-winning kick in extra time.

Villain of the match: Mike Harris - we were looking forward to seeing the series head into a decider next weekend! But we won't hold it against you... too much.

Con: Barnes
Pens: Barnes 5, Harris

Well, well, well another nail biting experience but our men in gold eventually came through. Well done Wallabies on wining a remarkable game.

Wales thank you for putting up a fight, you played your heart out and really feel for you. Had Wales won it wouldn't have been undeserved.

It's great to be an Aussie tonight though.

This shows a greater gap between North and South

A very poor All Blacks by their standard and a below parr Australia side still win!!!

It does not matter if you play fancy Rugby to entertain. If you want to win you need more points on the board after 80 minutes than the other team

If Priestland is picked for the next test Welsh fans should boycot ewatching it. Why didnt he just hand the ball to the Australians it would have been over quicker!

And less painless for us to watch!

makemehappy - you are absolutely right Dan Lydiate should have been red carded for that cheap shot on Pocock. Well played to both teams in any case - a classic test with very little in it. Next week will be unmissable.

Truly gutted.....Once again Wales show lack of intelligence and big game composure, we had so many opportunities at the end just to close it out - What was Webb doing box kicking in the dying minues>?! - just needed to keep the ball and go through the forwards.........Hook should be given an opportunity as Wales permanent 10, I just dont feel Priestlands got the management or composure for the big games...

Richard Hibbard should never play for Wales again. Takes a special kind of idiot to lose a test match in the 80th minute when they've defended their one point lead for 15 minutes already. Entering a maul incorrectly is a stupid penalty at the best of times, never mind in that situation. With Priestlands performance last week I think the two should be investigated for match fixing, they have both done much more harm than good.

how is it hypocrisy?? the all blacks cheated in crucial times....and the aussies didnt....thus one result can be deemed as a gritty preformance whilst the other is merely a lucky outcome for the home side......i am not going to laud the all blacks when credit is due to the irish...i am actually being objective

Two great games won in the last play of each game- well done all the countries involved so far - thats exactly what test rugby is about.

Just thought Wales lost this because the lineout was a bit of a shambles and Priestland just give too much free ball with aimless kicks - but like I said- small margins.

@FISH

You just posted this on the NZ v Ireland game

"new zealand infringed a few times...and more importantly at important times.....and got away with it....they seem to constantly get away with play that any other team wouldnt... anyway they won well done ireland excellent preformance....oh and i wanna hear how great the all blacks are now....not so great ..."

Care to explain how the Wallabies showed true grit, but that the All Blacks were just a bunch of cheats?

TVaddict says...

Why in the last few minutes, when Wales were in the lead, did they keep kicking the ball back to the Aussie back three? Surely the recognised match winning practise is to just drive with your forwards until times up? Why did they just kick it back to one of the most dangerous counter attacking teams in rugby? I don't understand.

@FISH, lol you truly are a hypocrite...and an ass...but a hypocrite nonetheless. So the All Blacks win the same way and you give them crap about it? and the Wallabies win then it is "true grit"?

Great to see the spirit and commitment we hoped for and expected from Wales and unfortunate the series will not go to a decider but all credit to both sides for the manner ion which the game was played.

Regardless of the final escape by Australia the result was pretty fair

Great fightbacks by Ireland & Wales, neither side deserved to lose but that's the way sport goes sometimes. That's what I like to see from NH sides, action over talk. Notice how neither side talked up their chances this week.

International Rugby is a beautiful game when neither side gives an inch. Two matches fully deserving the title of a "test" match. Good luck to England & the Springboks on another epic.

I really did think that was a harsh call as there is no way the Welsh would of purposely tried to collapse the maul with the game on the line & the Wallabies still 20 metres out from the try-line. I don't think the ball was even in the maul when it collapsed but I could be wrong.

@trinats2 - You going to blame the "Kiwi" ref this time lol? Surely not.

Well done Australia, you played the 80+ minutes, and won the game.

No complaints about the ref, he did not influence the result.

Easy to spot things watching the game live or on TV.

A good performance.

From a Welsh perspective, why does howley persist with Priestland, some good patches, but some howlers.

Chateris came on tfor AWJ?

Was he injured?

Need AWJ and Evans as the starters next week.

2 tries to 1, something we can rarely say against Aus.

Gutted.
