Decline: Scotland

Scotland and Spain are the only sides to fall in the IRB World Rankings after suffering defeats to Ireland in the Six Nations and Russia in the European Nations Cup respectively over the weekend.

The Scots were swept aside 28-6 in Dublin and as a consequence slip one place to 10th with Argentina the beneficiaries.

This was the only movement as a result of the opening weekend of the Six Nations, although Ireland have closed the gap to Wales above them in sixth as a result of that victory.

Wales were also victorious but the 23-15 win over Italy at the Millennium Stadium had no impact on their rating of 80.19, a consequence of the seven places and seven points separating the sides.

By snatching a 26-24 victory over England in the dying minutes, France have almost halved the deficit between the two teams in the rankings.

An England victory would have increased their cushion to six points, but that now sits at 2.47 points after the win by the fifth ranked Les Bleus at the Stade de France.

There were also minimal changes to the ranking as a result of the European Nations Cup Division 1A matches with Spain falling one place to 22nd after a narrow 28-25 loss to Russia in Madrid.

Russia, hit by a sickness bug on the eve of the match, had led 23-3 at one stage but Spain fought back only to come up just short in the competition which doubles as qualifiers for RWC 2015.

Portugal are the beneficiaries of their neighbour's defeat, despite falling to a 24-0 defeat to higher ranked Romania in the impressive Cluj Arena.

The Romanian victory on home soil leaves their rating unchanged in 17th, one place behind Georgia who were 35-0 winners over 27th ranked Belgium in Tbilisi.

By picking up a bonus point, Georgia now lead the standings by one point from Romania with Russia still in the hunt for RWC 2015 qualification in third, five points adrift of the Oaks.
