Steffon Armitage: Staying at Toulon

Toulon flanker Steffon Armitage has signed a new three-year deal which keeps him at the Heineken Cup winners until 2017.

In a video posted on Toulon's official website, Armitage said he is "very happy" with the extension to his deal.

Armitage arrived in Toulon in 2011, right next to Nice where he had lived with his family for many years before moving to England.

After five Tests for England in 2009, the ex-London Irish player was not called back by England bosses, Martin Johnson or Stuart Lancaster.

Armitage impressed many observers during his first campaign with Toulon in the 2011/2012 season - in which he scored seven tries in 27 games - when Midi Olympique elected him best foreign player in the Top 14.

His brothers Delon and Guy also joined the club during the following summer, although Guy went back to London Irish since.

He has made limited appearances due to the heavy competition for back-row positions at Toulon - with Juan Fernandez-Lobbe, Danie Rossouw, Pierrick Gunther, Virgile Bruni, Joe van Niekerk, Rocky Elsom and Juan Smith also battling for places.

His decision to sign a new deal may be linked with Fulgence Ouedraogo's decision to stay in Montpellier instead of joining Toulon. However Georgian hardman Mamuka Gorgodze, Ouedraogo's team-mate, is officially joining Toulon next season.

Armitage's decision will hamper his chances of returning to the Test arena with England as the English Federation preferring not to call up players in France.
