Cited Ashton could miss Test opener

Chris Ashton Northampton v Saracens

In hot water: Chris Ashton

Saracens wing Chris Ashton could be banned for the start of England's upcoming internationals after being cited for a dangerous tackle.

Ashton was cited for a tackle on Northampton speedster Vasily Artemyev during Saturday's Premiership clash at Franklin's Gardens.

The citing counts on Ashton's record as a yellow card, taking his tally for the season to three and triggering a disciplinary hearing.

He also received yellow cards for dangerous charging in the matches against London Irish on September 1 and Exeter Chiefs on September 23.

A RFU disciplinary panel of Jeff Blackett, Jeremy Summers and Peter Budge will consider the matter in London on Wednesday night.

Ashton was in a similar situation before during his first season with Northampton in the old National League One. On that occasion, he was banned for one week.

If the RFU's disciplinary panel decide to impose a suspension on this occasion, it would not apply to weeks when he is inactive.

Ashton was not among the England players released for Premiership duty this weekend. The next match he is due to play is England's Test against Fiji on November 10.

I don't think Biggs is better than Varndell. Just my opinion and you've every right to disagree.

to those who don't rate Varndell as a test level winger, what makes a good test winger for you ? As far as I can tell, Varndell has had 4 caps and scored 3 tries. At Saxons level, his record is pretty good too.

It's tough on a guy to say he's not international class after just 4 caps. Lancaster has said he'll pick players on form and so far this season, since september anyway, he's played 7 games and scored 6 tries.

I dare say there are more effective wingers around. Let's hear the names....

As a Saints supporter I was sorry to see his talent leave but didn't miss the personality. Now I can just dislike him without having to feel disloyal :)

The shoulder charge was a dangerous tackle & I couldn't understand why he didn't receive a yellow at the time.

Definitely a good chance for Wade to step up, I don't think there's much doubt that he's the form premiership winger at the moment. After last time I don't want to see Varndell anywhere near an England shirt.

He's a great finisher but also such an idiot. I'd like to see Wade and Sharples on the wing. I saw that Gloucester were using Sharples as a first receiver sometimes and we should implement that as well. It adds a pacey playmaker in the mid-field as well as a fantastic finisher, win win.

There is a clear pattern forming here. When will he learn??

He's good enough going forward, but not the best in defence but he shouldn't be doing this repeatedly. He clearly to the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to this.

And I agree with heart_of_oak - he is a trouble magnet and I'm really keen to see Wade wearing an England shirt. And Varndell is class too. We dont need Ashton.

I'd have preferred to see Wade and Varndell anyway. Ashton is a trouble magnet.
