Into the Shark Tank: England

The wait is finally over. Durban will be the setting for the first of three Tests between South Africa and England in a June series that promises so much.

It has been a long time since the English arrived in the Republic this confident, as they look to banish what happened in June 2007. Those two internationals - in Bloemfontein and Pretoria - saw the Springboks put a combined 113 points on their visitors. Few expect something similar.

Why? Well for once it is not the English being branded with the "team in transition" label as South Africa are the ones in flux. They are without the retired Victor Matfield and injured duo Schalk Burger and Juan Smith. They are also minus overseas-based players Jaque Fourie, Fourie du Preez and Bakkies Botha currently, with the prospect of the latter joining the squad following his Top 14 exploits not being ruled out by both head coach Heyneke Meyer and Botha himself.

That leads me on to the differing levels of readiness for this series opener at Kings Park and yet another reason why the recently extended Super Rugby term has become more trouble than it's worth. Not only has the quality of games dipped due to tired bodies but now it impacts on the June Tests.

Let me paint more of a picture of how the Springboks are coming into this international. Last weekend the Bulls faced the Stormers in a bruising derby fixture while the Lions hosted the Sharks in another draining encounter. Meanwhile, England were on a game reserve.

While there is a similar story in the north going into November, we've yet to see a series impacted such as this even before a ball has been kicked. Once respective Tests are completed, the south returns to Super Rugby before the Rugby Championship starts.

Consequently the notion that this first Test is where England have their best opportunity of claiming victory holds more weight, particularly as they tackle the Springboks at sea level instead of altitude. That is something that has caused personal angst to former skipper John Smit, who would have liked to see his former colleagues holding any advantage they could in the big opener. "Sadly they're taking England to Durban first, which will be the most comfortable venue of the series. I would have liked them to be taken to the dark corners of South Africa for the first week or two. Durban is sea level so the England players won't feel the burn in the back of the throats and the taste of blood after 20 minutes," he told the BBC.

Such passionate words offer those who are unfamiliar with what a series in South Africa holds an idea of what to expect. The intensity of games will be fierce while supporters will be equally hungry to follow up the 2009 British & Irish Lions with an English scalp.

That epic series three years ago was at the top end of what many of the Lions squad and coaches had faced in their careers, and there is undoubtedly going to be unfinished business in the back of people like Graham Rowntree, Ugo Monye and Lee Mears' minds, even if they refuse to admit it. Throw in a subplot of Brad Barritt and Mouritz Botha being South African born and we have many ingredients that I assure you will not spoil the broth.

Meyer's first squad announcement was met with a feeling of inevitability in many corners of South Africa, not least Cape Town where they feel the Bull heavy selection in the 32 will lead to more of a kick-and-chase style. Hence England coach Stuart Lancaster going for two full-backs in his XV as Mike Brown gets the nod alongside wings Ben Foden and Chris Ashton. Expect lots of airtime in Durban as we know what's coming...now, can England counter it?

Ones to watch:

For South Africa: The arrival of Eben Etzebeth and Marcell Coetzee has been greeted with applause by the vast majority as the duo have been in excellent form for the Stormers and Sharks respectively. Etzebeth is being touted as the new enforcer of South African rugby while Coetzee has been at the top end of the tackle and carry statistics in Super Rugby. Both are quality prospects in the green and gold and are by no means a step down from their predecessors. Watch Coetzee get through a great deal of work on the openside flank.

For England: Exeter Chiefs flanker Tom Johnson and Harlequins loosehead prop Joe Marler will win their first caps for England in the Shark Tank, with both impressing for their clubs this season. Johnson was strong against the Barbarians while Marler has been good for the Aviva Premiership champions. But we have not gone for the forward duo this week as there is one positional switch that caught the eye. Ben Foden being shifted from full-back to wing to accommodate Mike Brown has been long overdue. Brown deserves his shot while it will help the visitors that they have two 15s to help combat the aerial bombardment they are set to receive from the likes of Zane Kirchner and Morné and Frans Steyn. A right call.

Head-to-head: Get a pen ready as there are match-ups all over the field that are set to bring sparks. Starting up front, the Beast against Dan Cole should be good while Bismarck du Plessis and Dylan Hartley is sure to flare up at some point, with Doctor Du Plessis set to step in from tighthead prop should anything kick off. Geoff Parling's line-out battle with Juandré Kruger will be key but we opt for former Sharks centre Brad Barritt going toe-to-toe with his old team-mate Frans Steyn in the midfield. The term "unstoppable force meets immovable object" comes to mind. This should be a good battle with a lots of the physical.

Recent results:

2010: South Africa won 21-11 in London
2008: South Africa won 42-6 in London
2007: South Africa won 15-6 in Paris
2007: South Africa won 36-0 in Paris
2007: South Africa won 55-22 in Pretoria
2007: South Africa won 58-10 in Bloemfontein
2006: South Africa won 25-14 in London
2006: England won 23-21 in London
2004: England won 32-16 in London
2003: England won 25-6 in Perth
2002: England won 53-3 in London

Prediction: Not playing at altitude will offer England a level playing field this week. But it won't be enough for Lancaster's men as I see the Springboks squeezing home by 4!

The teams:

South Africa: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jean de Villiers, 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 François Hougaard, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.

@JayStar: Steady on china. I have contributed over the last few days. In a nutshell, I think the Boks are going to concede a fair amount of turnovers because of Coetzee's selection; I'm basing this assessment on the Sharks inability to secure their own ball during Super Rugby and as we both know, this task falls to the open-side. Also, I'm baffled by Basson's omission. But you have to admit your posts are very long.

@ new_j4a: Wow - you're a really determined bugger... lol. I can't remember that conversation - and am not going to look for it now - but it sounds like I'm saying Smit was the best hooker over the last 10 years - not at that particular point in time. And in that case it's correct - his form only took a dip when they tried to turn him into a prop... and he never quite recovered. Reading the rest of what I said I'm quite impressed with my typing skills and agree wholeheartedly with myself... :P

@ SACannuck: Yes, it is absolutely true that the Stormers have never won a Super Rugby trohpy - and the Bulls have 3 times. But are we picking a 2012 Springbok team based on 2007, 2009 and 2010 form, or are we picking the best players from the best teams in the here and now? Seems like Meyer is doing the former - and intends to play 2007 Bulls rugby too. And that is my problem.

As for White - yes he is doing very well with the Brumbies... but don't disregard the influence of Larkham, Jones and Gregan ;)

@JayStarr...and yet another quote "And in a World Cup QF, SF or Final, I'd have Smit every day of the week - and anybody who says otherwise, knows nothing about pressure."....as opposed to the headless typist JayStarr who knows nothing about rugby?

@JayStarr...and yet another quote "As an open-eyed, free-thinking person who questions everything, I shall keep on defending PdV and John Smit".....apparently not..you appear to be distancing yourself from Smit since all your predictions of Bok triumph at the RWC turned to dust.....

@jaystarr I have no dislike for the bulls and I am proud as SA of what they have achieved in the name of SA rugby as I am of the sharks but wish province had more.

So answer to being embarrassed not true, quite the opposite. HM will make mistakes and will be judged on the results. Not sure why you rate England so much as they have so far achieved nothing as a team.

Answer me this if England bring their A game and SA bring A game who wins'!!!!!!!!!!

Jaystarr, lets not forget that the Stormers have never won the Super Rugby trophy, and the Bulls have. I am not happy with all the Bulls on the team as well, but it is still early days for this Bok team and you have to give a new coach a year to get things going. Only after that can you really judge. Oh and Jake seems to be OK at the Brumbies!!!!

@JayStarr, In response to an article titled "Smit is world's best hooker - PdV" you defend both PDV and Smit as follows (and in several other instances). Don't bother to apologize for calling me a liar....I don't really care what you think or in fact whether you think.....typist!

JayStarr Posted 12:33 03rd September 2011..."Besides, if you look at the last 10 years, everything considered, Smit probably is the best hooker... So in that sense PdV is right.

Regardless - Smit is the captain, this is the World Cup, he will be starting most games. The decision has been made - in many ways it is the right decision - now DEAL WITH IT."

@ Sharkyzulu - Alberts is a great player but his form ths season has been poor and stats show that he has missed plenty tackles - but as the saying goes "form is temp, class is permanent" he is a classy player and will come through!.

Good to have test rugby back though!! How dull a world would be without it!!!

And now in other news: For those who are not happy to see Walsh reffing this game... He's reffing two games in this test series! Wtf?

Posted 13:27 08th June 2012

JayStarr says...

@ newj_4a: Really? That is news to me. I remember defending PdV when people tried to make him out to be the worst coach in history (even though he picked very good Bok squads, made players like Brussouw, Aplon, JdJ and Mvovo Springboks - which White would've never done - and for 4 years had a similiar win record to White - including beating the All Blacks in NZ)... but I don't recall saying John Smit is the best hooker in the world - maybe because I don't think so at all and didn't say it. So you're effectively putting words in my mouth.

Besides, how can you know what I say when you "fast forward" whenever you see my name? So either way, you're lying...

I'd rather speak my mind and say things I know not everyone would agree with than be a liar.

JayStarr says...

@ bokbevok: It's not about rating the England team highly and the Springbok team poorly - it's about analysing the situation and coming to the conclusion that the cards are heavily stacked against the Springboks. If I rated this English team so highly, I would've said they're going to win the series - and that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying the first test is theirs to lose, because the Boks are there for the picking (for reasons provided) - provided England come with their A-game and play smart. These comments are not "anti-Boks" - and if you read my original post you would've seen that only one point had to do with the selections... so it's about much more than that. And PS: the saying in SA is that if Province is strong, the Springboks are strong - not the Bulls. (Sounds like you're a Bulls supporter in disguise - and that's the only thing to be embarrassed about).

@ philipjfry: And you're still typing with two fingers. Are we going to insult each other or do you have something useful to say?

@ Armchairgeneral: I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not making excuses, I'm saying this first test is England's to lose.

@ Sharkyzulu: Are you kidding me? Is that why Alberts is the loose-forward with the most missed tackles in Super Rugby at the moment..? Oh wait, seems like Josh Strauss has gone past. Alberts is now the 2nd worst defender. But if you consider the guys Strauss is surrounded by, and then consider the team Alberts plays in, Alberts has no excuses for being so poor. So yeah, maybe you're the one who needs to get their facts straight.

@ SACannuck: Give the new coach credit for what? The fact that he picked as many players from the Bulls reserves bench as he picked from the entire Stormers squad (the best team in SA for the last 2 years - who beat the Bulls twice this year)? Because he hasn't even played a game yet...

Total rubbish that England only won the Ireland game due to injury. Both sides had injured players, however the power of England's scrum deservedly won the game. With regards to saturday, I think that England must run the ball back rather than kick every boring ping pong punt that the Boks kick at us, because the power of the Boks will win them penalties. The first test is by far and away our best chance, however I think the inexperience of Farrell will undo us... Boks by 5-10

Leaving aside the risibly myopic comments such as "England only won the Ireland game due to injury", SA should win this test. Australia should beat Wales. But unless one of the tri nations teams really gets the backing of the ref (which regrettably is going to be important) or really gets into an attacking groove, then both tests should be a proper contest.

NH sides only beat the tri nations teams away from home on pretty rare occasions, a look at the stats shows how big an ask this is. Wales may be settled enough to manage it, England are very early in their development and I think are too frail at 9 and 10, and too young in the pack, to pull this off. It is a good squad, but it needs a few more years. Young players with little international experience do a lot better at home than away and that is why I think SA by 5-10. I think they can take anyone else away from home but this England side is unlikely to be streetwise enough to take on SA or NZ, they will beat them up - again. Probably quite literally if the ref does not insist on proper discipline in front of the home crowd.

That said, if England get some early points on the board and settle, and the ref is on top of the SA enforcers and The Beast's scrummaging legality, I would not be at all shocked to see an England win.
