@ jonesy2 - it's his nickname and, as such, gets used a lot. Much like "Freddie" Flintoff, I suppose.

And, in fairness, he is one too!

jonesy2 says...

haha why is he calling him "the beast". if i was him i would be calling him Mtawarira. neither team have the best "packs" but SA for sure with the upper hand obviously but really only through their front row. mainly because we dont know what the rest is going to look like.

edhutson -- i have no idea what you are talking about in the slightest. how do england especially have a better "pack" than the allblacks or wallabies, or wales for that matter? youre insane boy.

quite franky all this scrum talk is idiotic. this will be a horrible series if this is the focal point. i hope the boks play some good rugby but the words of the coach dont look like pertaining to that

@Makemehappy, I suppose that would comfort a Wales fan. However I don't think Cole is at the same level as Jones yet thus England can't afford to make that comparison and hope for the same outcome. I believe that if Murray had been healthy the Lions would've won the series. Victor Matfield was even quoted as saying Murray's absence was a major difference maker. People like to bash Murray for his religious beliefs which have resulted in his having to play for an inferior club team but he is one of, if not the best, tight head props in the world.

Why would any proffesional prop fear his opposite number ,is the beast good yes.But then so is Cole, can both packs scrummage yes. Will either dominate the other doughtful .Will it be a hard test mach which can go either way most probibly imoJust hope its a good match to watch, and played with total respect by both sides for eachother.Going to be a very interesting series imho

@5Lock4ward - isn't it more appropriate to note that Jones wasn't injured and sent the Beast packing?

JamieTheProp says...

Propping is all about playing the ref and gaining an advantage.

I think the Beast has done that well over the years but on Saturday will happen upon a scrum as good as any he has played against - we'll see what gives!

I can't wait - should be awesome!

Wow!! some of the comments here are a tad jauundice eyed to say the very least. Beast walks around the corner, bores in and up!!! Hell, show me a prop or 2 that has not done that?? As for the game, I am a SAFFA and give the 1st game to England, they have some momentum and been together for a while now. Good to see their improvement. They won`t shoot the lights out with an expansive game but will grind out matches. As for the Boks, well none of us know what to expect but am hyper excited about some of the new kids in the side.

Hmmm. No doubt the beast is strong...holding his fellow lock above his head. Lots of energy around the park (but then I'd be more worried about Bismarck carrying around the paddock) come scrum time he gets pinged quite a lot. We will see.

APV1 says...

"...infamously outmuscled British and Irish Lions prop Phil Vickery..." - or, in it's correct term, cheated and got away with boring in at the scrum. That said, he's an awesome prop and his strength to not drop his fellow-players was incredible.

It's going to be a good match-up, that's for sure.

It seems SA have opted for a big pack; weight and height over mobility for an onlooker. How it will pan out over 80 minutes is the question. THey will miss Scott B for sure.

Though NZ also has a sizeable pack some of those big boys can really move.

Remember one test where Franks was the first at ruck , before Kaino and McCaw!

NOw Sam W seems to be also playing like a a loosy.

lawynd says...

@pembs - it certainly didn't seem that way during the 6N game, you naughty little troll you! If Jones had been pinged for binding on the arm at all, Wales may have less than the parity they had overall.

pembs says...

Wales has a better pack than both teams

edhutson says...

can not wait for these two forward packs to clash on saturday, this will surely decide who has the beastiest pack in world rugby, england are the underdogs, i would say italy might have something to say about this but i feel they lack presence in the second row

Carpelone says...

The Beast can be a liability at scrum. He always pushes, goes around the corner and bores in. That would be penalty. He must learn to wait for his teammates.

Headhunter99 says...

Nice middle of the road comment that we have come to expect in Rugby. Total respect etc. What would be nice is to say" yep he destroyed Vickery by boring in and getting under him, however when

Adam jones came on he did the same to the beast and nailed him - lesson learned "

Props are just to nice to each other these days

Oh the Lions tour... if only Euan Murray hadn't been injured midway through it.
