It depends when players signed for a foreign club - before a certain date then as long as they have England meet dates planned into their contracts then that is OK - after a certain date they are not eligible! Hence Palmer being able to play (and Wilkinson). Silly rule - The Premiership is so poor these days players can only benefit from better experience in other countries!

could the problem with Steffon Armitage be that he's 1.75 m ? I remember all the talk about Neil Back not being big enough but my God was he good. But if Palmer and Haskell can be considered and if SL picks players on form, then Armitage has to get a look in.
I'm beginning to think this overseas player ban thing is a bit of a smokescreen or an excuse. If Wilko hadn't retired when he did, I'll bet he'd have picked even if he played in Japan.

APV1, the Highlanders' last pool game is on July 6 (they have a bye on the 13th, the last regular week of S15). If the Highlanders make the final, that's the first weekend in August!
The way your policy works (modelled as it is on SH unions), if you play for an overseas club, you're not eligible for national selection. Granted, this appears aimed at French clubs but last time I checked, Dunedin was a lot more overseas than France!!
How England can say they are seriously considering him is a puzzler!

good to see haskell probably touring, will do the team good especially with wood and croft out, plus he'll be used to the south african grounds.
cipriani shouldn't be mentioned anywhere near this tour

They have to take Care, he's playing well, paid his dues, learnt a few lessons so time to move on. Couldn't agree more about Steffan Armitage though, absolutely standout for Toulon this year. and the only real standout openside qualified for England. True there are some with potential but as yet not proved and with all the best will in the world Robshaw is a six, but with Crofty out and Wood also the opportunity is there to have another look at him. Personally think that his brother is well worth a shout too. He has never once let England down despite his misdemenors at club level and a Tour to the South Africa is the best way to sort the men from the boys. South Africa at home are a big ask and very physical so lets see how they get on.

@ fiwiboy & nabberuk - I think it is still RFU policy, but as JH will be plying his trade back in England next season, he becomes eligible once he has played his last S15 game.
I'm not 100% sure of that, but it's my understanding.
Big shame is that SL isn't mentioning (Steffon) Armitage, which must mean that he's either ruled out due to the overseas player policy, or for another reason. He's playing so well for Toulon, that I'd hoped we might see him back in England colours soon.
Good to see Care back in consideration too. He's a good player, who has "done his bird". He just needs to learn from this and keep his nose clean.
I also agree that Cips needs to settle into Sale first and then look towards the 2013 6N. But he'll need to be better than the rest and I don't think he is at the moment. Heathcote's with the U20s, so should develop well there. To usurp Farrell and Flood, he'll also need to get past Ford, Burns, Hodgson, Geraghty, Clegg, Myler and Lamb. Some of whom will be more difficult to surpass than others, I grant you, but they're all still (just about!) in the mix.
I was extremely critical of Care and his antics and still think that he was a berk. But here's his opportunity to prove that he's put it behind him and is focusing on a positive future.

If James Haskell is called up, wouldn't that violate England's no-overseas-based players policy? Would be interesting to see if he can seamlessly adjust to England's style and where they would play him. For the last few weeks, Haskell has been starting in the openside jersey for the Highlanders with Adam Thompson at blindside (athough the two of them are naturally suited to the other's current role).

It would be nice to see Haskell and Care back in the squad as they're both excellent players, so long as the team ethic is maintained I don't think it really matters which of the players (that are in the picture at least) are selected...

I believe that Care could and should be CONSIDERED. He's served his ban and hopefully will avoid any further misdemeanours. Hopefully.
I rate Care as a 9 and feel that England need him.
Don't feel the same way about Cipriani though.
