Shame he's had to call it a day. He's a hero to us england fans, He helped us win the World Cup! Awesome achievement! Cheers Steve, At least you can say you retired while still being the best hooker in the England team. Good luck!

@JasonHarrison
"generally considered the typical arrogant Englishman"
Mate you really ought to engage your brain and find things out before typing away. Thompson is not from a middle class wealthy background, its well documented that he had to come through the hard way to Northampton from the feeder clubs. Not the standard stereotype !! Great guy who as other have said gave the money back to keep on playing.

Good luck with your (2nd!) retirement, Steve! Good man that you are.
@ rockman - If a RWC winner told me that I was a credit to myself and my family after playing against them head-to-head, I'd be on Cloud 9! What an accolade! Steve Thompson said I'd played well!
Pompous? Not at all. Encouraging a debutant is a sign of a player who appreciates that rugby evolves and there are new comers on their way up.

@jasonharrison.... you have no idea what your talking about do you !!, you say glass house's, which means as you obviously don't know " don't throw stones if you live in a glass house" please do explain how that applies to my post @rockman, I defended a player who has given great service to his clubs and country and who came back to play rugby from a very serious injury and showed where his passion lay. you on the other hand hide in a forum and insult players your not worthy to clean the jockstraps of.

Not a player i ever really liked but there is a lot to be said about being that passionate about rugby and to give back £500k just to keep on playing. There was a game a few years back where he came across a debutant hooker at international level. In his post match interview he said how he was impressed by the newbie and had told him after "you are a credit to yourself and your family". How pompous is this? Who does he think he is to say this?
