On the move?: Ashley-Cooper is being targeted by Lyon

There might not be a flood of Australian players heading to France next year after all according to former Wallaby fly-half and Lyon coach Tim Lane.

There have been worries in Australian ranks that the international team could be decimated by departures to the Top 14 after the 2015 World Cup.

However Lane, whose Lyon side were promoted back to the Top 14 this season, explained that restrictions on foreign players in the league might reduce the number of Australian players brought in.

He believes that New Zealanders and South Africans are regarded as safer bets when it comes to recruitment, although some of the stars of the Australian game will still be targets for the big clubs.

This season Lyon have brought in Wallaby legend George Smith, and are one of the club's keen on bringing in Will Genia, while Lane also revealed that Adam Ashley-Cooper could be a target for the club.

"I wouldn't say everyone is talking about Australian players,'' Lane told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"The All Blacks and Springboks are more popular over here in France.

"The French federation are limiting the number of foreign players per team.

"Because we have been promoted, we can have 17 foreigners, where the other teams have 16 - while over the next two to three years those numbers [will] diminish.

"So you have to be pretty spot on with your foreigners. Most teams will only sign current or ex-internationals.

"Obviously you are going to look at the All Blacks. You are going to look at the Springboks."
