Season over for Pocock

05th March 2014 12:04

Season over: David Pocock

After undergoing a second knee reconstruction in twelve months, David Pocock's Super Rugby season has been cruelly cut short.

The Wallaby flanker made his return to competitive rugby with the Brumbies, playing in their two opening Super Rugby clashes with the Reds and the Western Force.

Pocock underwent the second knee reconstruction on Wednesday, having sustained the damage during last weekend's comfortable win over the Force.

The 25-year-old, one of the stars of the game, had an arthroscope on Wednesday, with surgeon Peter Myers opting for immediate reconstructive surgery such was the extent of the damage.

After Brumbies staff initially believed the injury to be minor, the news comes as a devastating blow for Pocock, and the franchise's own aspirations this season.

The flanker now faces a nine-month lay-off, just weeks after returning from tearing his anterior cruciate ligament almost exactly a year ago.

The Canberra Times reports that medical staff are confident Pocock will be able to get his career back on track next year.

"Having worked so hard to get himself back to peak physical condition over the last 12 months it's impossible not to feel for David," Brumbies Director of Rugby Laurie Fisher said in a club statement released on Wednesday.

"Only yesterday he was speaking about how much enjoyment he'd been getting out of his rugby this year so to have him sitting out the rest of our campaign is bitterly disappointing for him and the rest of the team.

"What we must remember is that David is still young and will have more opportunities to play professional rugby in the future. Guys like Ben Mowen and Christian Leali'ifano are living proof that you can make a successful comeback from a recurring injury and I'd expect to see David bounce back in the same way.

"Professionally, David has had a big impact on the way the Brumbies have prepared and approached the 2014 Super Rugby season and I'd like to see him continue to contribute to the way the team carries itself both on and off the field."
