Big day: Rocky Elsom

Former Wallaby Rocky Elsom will have a medical at Toulon on Monday ahead of signing for the Top 14 side despite being dogged by recent injury issues.

The back-row forward, a regular favourite with people who like to bet on rugby, could sign as cover before a permanent deal is penned at Stade Felix Mayol.

"If the medical is successful, then the player will sign with Toulon," said a club statement.

Elsom, a veteran of 75 internationals between 2005 and 2011, has suffered a series of groin injuries and also undergone shoulder surgery, is being backed by bookmakers like Paddy Power to pass his medical.

His last club action came with the Warathas in Super Rugby and in Japan with Kobelco Steelers.

30-year-old Elsom has been lined up to replace Stephane Munoz who has been out of action with a fractured orbital lobe since January.

The Australian has played in Europe before, winning the Heineken Cup with Leinster in 2009.

Elsom off to the Toolong (in the tooth) retirement home. He was dipping in form when he left Leinster.

My word, Toulon just keeps getting deeper and deeper. However this model only works for super rich clubs, as every player is getting a hefty wage. It means loads of experience, limited losses during internationals, and bags of talent, but it does mean there is no real youth coming through. So if the money does ever run dry then Toulon has homegrown talent to come through the ranks and take up the senior roles.
