Canterbury could be boosted by the presence of Dan Carter this season, as the All Blacks consider the right route for his return to Test rugby.

The fly-half, who hasn't played for New Zealand since last November's game against England, suffered a leg break in the Super Rugby Final.

Carter though, 32, is now nearing a return but All Black head coach Steve Hansen is wary about throwing him back into international rugby.

"It's just whether we bring him straight back into Test rugby or whether we bring him back with a few games under his belt," he told Yahoo! New Zealand when asked about his preferred route.

"Once we get to a point to where we have to start making those decisions then we'll sit down with him and see how confident he is. Then we'll map out a strategy."

Carter is no stranger to dropping down from international rugby and in fact played for his local club side, Southbridge, in order to ready himself for Super Rugby action in 2014.
