World Cup winner Richard Kahui is targeting a return to New Zealand after a two-year stint in Japan.

The former Chiefs and All Blacks centre started the 2011 World Cup final on the wing in the last of his 17 Tests for the New Zealand.

Having struggled with injuries throughout his career, he moved to Japan in 2013 to play for Toshiba Brave Lupus.

Still only 29, Kahui could link up with Sonny Bill Williams at the Chiefs, with the league star also joining the Waikato club in 2015.

But Kahui admits he will only make the move if he feels his body is up to the strain of Super Rugby.

"Hopefully over the next couple of weeks we'll get that opportunity to make the decision either way so hopefully the body is good and then we can come home and bring my family home but otherwise if the body's not good then we'll probably stay here," Kahui told 3News.

"The World Cup is coming up so even if you're not part of the team it's great to be home and just to have a chance to, at least, put your hand up.

"Been watching those guys [Chiefs] since I left and it's a fairly special team and something you want to be a part of."
