Sale Sharks new lock Nathan Hines has back his new hard-working squad to surprise the top teams in the coming season.

Hines has just left a star-studded Clermont squad to join the Premiership outfit where he played alongside the likes of Morgan Parra, Wesley Fofana and Sitiveni Sivivatu.

But the Scotland second row knows that in any game it's about what happens on the pitch as opposed to the reputations off it.

"A hard-working team can beat a team of stars. We haven't got the biggest budget or the most internationals in the squad," said Hines.

"Pressure's going to come into a game and it's how you react to it. Hopefully we've got enough old heads to calm the guys who have never been in that situation.

"A lot of the guys here have a lot of experience so I won't be alone."

Sale rebounded from a desperate campaign in 2012/2013 to make the top six last season, with Hines admitting that consistency now is key.

"Historically they've had a good year and then a bad year, so it's a big challenge to keep that consistency from last year and do the same," added Hines.

"Guys coming in and leaving can be a factor. I think after 2006 a lot of guys left here but I think it's just about being relentless and keeping going, having that continual effort but still looking to improve yourself.

"I think we've got a group here who will try and sustain the momentum. Last year there were a couple of new additions, though the coaches can only get you so far so it's up to the players to drive it really.

"Last year was a benchmark and we don't want to see the standards slip."
