Taylor hangs up his boots

Gloucester fly-half Tim Taylor has announced his retirement from professional rugby at the end of the current domestic season.

The 31 year old joined the Cherry and Whites on loan from Nottingham during the 2009-10 season and during his four seasons at the club made 41 appearances, scoring 171 points, which included six tries.

Perhaps a highlight was the winning kick he landed to lead the team to victory over Harlequins as part of an inspired performance at The Stoop in February 2010. He then played part in the triumphant LV= Cup campaign a year later in 2011.

His most recent first team appearance for the club came in last season's Challenge Cup pool victory over London Irish before the campaign was cut short by a knee injury sustained during the A League semi-final against Harlequins at The Stoop.

An accomplished kicker, Taylor has spent his most recent time at the club as kicking coach to the squad and also runs a kick-coaching clinic.

On top of that, Taylor is fully focused now on his personal training business and, despite having to make the tough decision to hang up his boots, the Derby born pivot has put all plans in place to succeed post rugby.

Taylor says that although the decision was a tough one, he cannot wait for what the future holds for him.

"When I first suffered the injury at The Stoop, I hoped to return but it hasn't been so. I am so grateful to everyone at the club for their hard work in both my recovery and keeping me fit. It has been great to remain involved with the players and help out with kicking and skills coaching," said Taylor.

"This element of the recovery has allowed me to fulfill my interest in fitness and personal training and so going forward I can fully focus on my new ventures.

"This is such a special club and Kingsholm is the one of the best places to play in the world, and I mean that. The supporters have given me so much backing both when I was on the pitch and in my recovery since.

"And a huge thanks must go to my wife Jodie and my family for all their support as well."

Taylor's retirement means three of Gloucester's current pivots will not be on the books next season, with Freddie Burns and Ryan Mills also moving on. The Premiership outfit have brought in Scotland international Greig Laidlaw as a "nine-cum-ten" to partially fill the void.
