Don Armand Exter v Toulon HEC 2013

Don Armand: Still upbeat

Exeter flanker Don Armand insists the club's players are not losing heart despite a five-match losing streak.

The Chiefs suffered back-to-back defeats to Heineken Cup champions Toulon, went down twice to third-placed Premiership side Bath and lost oncee to league leaders Saracens over the past month.

But although they are struggling to secure victory, three of their defeats were by less than seven points and Armand sees plenty of positives which they can take from those fixtures.

"They are five results that have gone against us, but if you look at them they've all been very close," he told the Exeter Express and Echo.

"We had the TMO decisions at Bath and things like that have gone against us. It's very frustrating but it's better than to have lost by 20 minutes and not learned anything from it.

"It's not a set of results that have left us feeling down in the dumps. We can feel positive about the way we've been playing."

Last weekend's 32-20 defeat to Toulon in the Heineken Cup ended Exeter's chances of reaching the tournament's quarter-finals. The 25-year-old South African believes Toulon's experienced internationals helped the champions secure the win.

"It was a disappointing result losing," Armand added.

"I think we matched them in the first half but credit to Toulon, they had a few moments of individual brilliance," he said.

"Those guys are seasoned international rugby players and they capitalised on one or two moments. We had one or two opportunities to score when we didn't.

"It was a good effort from the boys, we can be proud of what we did there. It was very hard in Toulon, the atmosphere there is very hard to play in, something quite special."

Exeter face Newcastle at home in the Aviva Premiership this weekand and Armand believes they can register that much-needed win.

"We need to maintain the intensity we played at in the Heineken Cup," he said.

"We need to get the focus back on the Premiership, know what we're trying to achieve with it and play with those goals in mind."
