Di Bernardo: 16 points for Treviso

Alberto di Bernardo kicked 16 points as Treviso secured a 26-17 PRO12 triumph over Cardiff Blues at the Stadio Monigo on Saturday.

Alessandro Zanni's try and two di Bernardo penalties gave Treviso a 13-10 lead at the interval, with the Blues responding through Dafydd Hewitt's touchdown and Ceri Sweeney's three-pointer.

Although Lou Reed went over to give Cardiff an early advantage in the second half, a penalty try and eight more points via the boot of their fly-half sealed the victory for Benetton.

Both of these teams had very little to play for apart from pride, but the opening period proved to be a lively affair.

Sweeney opened the scoring for Cardiff before the Blues failed to properly deal with the restart. That allowed Treviso to build and Zanni, playing his first game since starring for Italy in the Six Nations, touched down.

Di Bernardo was on target with the conversion and the hosts led 7-3 with 13 minutes gone.

However, in a topsy-turvy first half, the visitors responded with a converted try of their own when centre Hewitt scampered across the whitewash.

Benetton once again responded, though, and successive penalties from their fly-half established a 13-10 half-time advantage.

It was the Welsh region who controlled the initial exchanges of the second period and Reed powered over to take Cardiff back into the lead.

But a yellow card for back-row Mike Patterson allowed the hosts to build a period of pressure, and the Blues eventually succumbed as the referee awarded a penalty try.

The win was finally secured through di Bernardo who kicked two further three-pointers.
