Jenkins leads, Tipuric starts

14th March 2013 13:03

Sam Warburton walking to training with Gethin Jenkins

Captain: Gethin Jenkins

Wales will be captained by Gethin Jenkins for their Six Nations fixture with England in a line-up that sees Justin Tipuric come in as openside.

Jenkins has recovered from a calf-injury that ruled him out of the victory at Murrayfield and will win his 98th cap when he captains the XV on Saturday.

He comes back into the front-row and will line-up alongside Richard Hibbard and Adam Jones.

Ospreys duo Alun-Wyn Jones and Ian Evans continue their lock partnership with the latter featuring in his tenth straight Six Nations match.

In the absence of captain Ryan Jones in the back-row, Sam Warburton switches to blindside flanker with Tipuric coming in to wear the number seven shirt alongside Toby Faletau at number eight.

Wales' 28-18 victory in Edinburgh set a new Welsh record for consecutive away victories in the tournament and the consistency continues in the selection with interim head coach Rob Howley naming the same back line that has started each Six Nations game this season.

Mike Phillips will become Wales' most capped scrum-half when he wins his 77th cap, surpassing Dwayne Peel's previous record of 76. Phillips partners Dan Biggar at half-back.

Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies line-up in the centre with Leigh Halfpenny, Alex Cuthbert and George North making up the back-three.

Wales' experienced side features twelve players who started the Grand Slam decider against France last season.

"The players have worked very hard to put themselves in this position for Saturday, with three hard fought victories on the road," said Howley.

"Gethin comes back in and will captain the side and his leadership will be invaluable.

"Saturday is a big finale for the tournament but we have a very experienced squad, who have been in this position before, that have played in big games and that will be important come kick-off."

Bath prop Paul James takes his place amongst the replacements and the only other change sees Aaron Shingler come in to replace Tipuric.

Wales: 15 Leigh Halfpenny, 14 Alex Cuthbert, 13 Jonathan Davies, 12 Jamie Roberts, 11 George North, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Mike Phillips, 8 Toby Faletau, 7 Justin Tipuric, 6 Sam Warburton, 5 Ian Evans, 4 Alun-Wyn Jones, 3 Adam Jones, 2 Richard Hibbard, 1 Gethin Jenkins.
Replacements: 16 Ken Owens, 17 Paul James, 18 Scott Andrews, 19 Andrew Coombs, 20 Aaron Shingler, 21 Lloyd Williams, 22 James Hook, 23 Scott Williams.

Date: Saturday, 16 March
Venue: Millennium Stadium, Cardiff

Quite interesting to see that both sets of supporters have the blinkers on!

Heathy, calling scrumtime blinkered, take a look at your own comments!

I respect your opinion just don't agree with them!

Great occasion, after the Ireland game, would not have bet 2p on Wales being in with a shout.

But then I thought Ireland would have been better as well.

A really topsy turvy 6N, hope Italy and France can keep the stats for all home victories on Saturday!

The funny thing that gets me ,is Wales feeling confidant because theve won 3 away matches in the 6Ns,and are now at home.Er hello England have won their last 5 away matches in the 6Ns,and their last 4 home matches,so big deal Wales on that. Also thats turn it around shall we.Wales have lost their last 4 home matches,is that a cause for optomisism, not usually. As usual a team is just looking at anything posative,to give them confidance.,and putting a spin on it.Also when you consider, that England have played against teams with the possible exception of Ireland ,who have produced their best showing this championship against them ,the gap does look a tad wider, aswell.I fully expect a very hard tense game this weekendwith an England victory at the end of it by 5-7 points to be honest. Also all this BS about Wales handling the pressure better, takes no account that every week in the AP is a pressure game, and alot of the english players have played in championship finals and the later stages of the HC,Something most welsh players havent done .It all equals out imo,in the end .

Target them at the scrum boys as it's a tuff game and we have to use our strengths. England are a good team now but so were we at the world cup and then we had an 8 match loosing streak.

No team is unbeatable as england proved with new zealand. And for christ sake someone get tuilago off as soon as possible becuase then they have no attack. Our back line is full of attack but we havent seemed to use them as much in this years tournament. Just look at george, hasn't seemed to do much in this tournament but he has beaten 13 players with ball in hand. USE HIM

@scrumtime - Oooo, you have missed out so very much. If that was the case then it is a Wales win then? Er, I don't think having a completely blinkered and 'a few selected stats will help my argument' will wash with most here. Good luck with that argument matey. Very well put together (!?) lol

Then again, you may be on the money!!

Let's look at the facts, you have England playing away who have failed to score a try in their last 3 games against Wales playing at home who have not conceded a try in their last three games and who have not failed to score a try in each game of the championship so far, also Wales have outscored England by 7 tries to 5, only leads to one conclusion, a Wales win!

I'm surprised as I really don't see Melons as a captain at all. If everything goes to form then England should win this at a canter. This is where we will find out where England really are. Let's be honest here and state that this tournament has not showed the best rugby. However, through thick and thin, England have played the most consistent and structured rugby and they have won all their games. Wales, by their standards have been poor and the rugby they have won has been against sides playing even more badly than they have. I completely know England had their blip against Italy playing their best game of the tournament but Wales v Scotland was diabolical. It was the worst game of the lot. So, both sides can't claim to be coming off the back of a great win. If we look at form then England will win this one easily. They just need to keep their composure and play the rugby they have been playing all tournament. The small tweak will be to finish off the good positions they get into. If England do that with a ruthless streak then Wales will struggle. Also, the England bench is far far stronger then the Welsh. This at times has made the difference and I can see this happening again. There is a debate about having every one of the England bench in the starting line up. For the Welsh there isn't. Their bench are the second best. However, can England cope with the pressure when it means something? New Zealand is a long way in the past and nothing was riding on that game. Find that form though and Wales will be blown away. Crack under the pressure and Wales will triumph. How far have this English side come? We will find out Saturday.

A very mobile pack if not lacking some real grunt with Jones, lydiate, davis and James missing from the starting team. This looks like a team picked for a dry pitch and a closed roof. I hope England target Biggar as i think he is the biggest question mark. I have a horrible feeling Wales will edge this one, however england have a stronger bench so the last 20 minutes could make all the difference !

Both teams very similar to last yr although both try scorers are absent. Lydiate also who was good, and Foden who didn't do too well v Wales. Form however is very different re the England players. The last game was very close throughout. If it is the same again that's huge pressure on Wales. Firey start. Hope England note how Wales started v Scotland. V dangerous.
