'Canes to speak to Bray about Walsh

Mark Hammett Hurricanes coach 2012

Not happy: Mark Hammett

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett has said that he will take up Steve Walsh's performance at Suncorp Stadium with Sanzar referees' chief Lydnon Bray.

Following the New Zealand outfit's 18-12 defeat to the Reds, captain Conrad Smith was clearly biting his tongue during Friday's post match interview.

And it seems Hammett had similar feelings as he highlighted a string of decisions made by Walsh that impacted on their eventual Super Rugby loss.

"Don't get me wrong, there were some that were right. That's how it goes." he told Fairfax about Walsh's calls.

"You have some players that don't have good games and sometimes it's the same with referees - in this case no-one had as bad a game as he did."

While coach Hammett gave off a light-hearted demeanour to the press, he was serious when confirming he would take up Walsh's showing with Sanzar referees' boss Bray.

"I actually think Steve is a very good ref and I thought he was one of the better refs last year ... I think it was his first or second game of the season, so maybe that was it," he said.

"If it's consistent and it's going both ways you live with that because you get the rub of the green the other way.

"But look, we need to take that up with Lyndon Bray, the referees' manager."

Hammett insisted, however, that he felt there was nothing untoward about the shove Walsh gave to his Hurricanes captain Smith when the outside centre entered his running line.

Hmmm trying to work out who and where you came from, but alas you are a fair bit younger than I. But I spent many year reffing in the Naki . 1970-88 when I left for the Counties Manukau area. You were starting as I was retiring. Probably knew your dad though if he refereed.

ramage - ferdie the ref - family tradition I inherited my father's Acme Thunderer but never mde it to the level he did. 1994-99 in New Plymouth then to Wellington and continued there till 2005. Remember commenting on one of your posts last year you were on South Taranaki/Hawera? Stopped due to work had option of OT every Saturday, mortgage came first; Wgtn was great for refs, excellent support, coaching and regular assessments, usually 2 games per Saturday but at times three, high school, club then third on the touchline.

Walsh is a show paony who spends most his time looking at the big screen replays to check if the cameras are on him. They arent Steve... get it?

Not too clear what he actually saying ? but I agree with Hammett, Reds would have have a bonus 5 pointer if Walsh had of been on form !

Yes, ferdie, quite right. But there is pressure from 'HQ' at Twickenham to put the spotlight on Walsh because he's officiating at England's probable grand-slam decider at the Millennium Stadium a week Saturday. Can't have a non-believer spoiling the party can we! I mean, certain decisions might go against England and that would of course be wrong, wrong, wrong ;)

I thought that every match at this level required each team's coach to do a referee review and provide feedback on performance, as part of the weekly SANZAR referee performance review?

A non-story then.
