Bakkies Botha cited

Bakkies Botha: In hot water, again

Toulon second-row Bakkies Botha has been cited for a shoulder charge on Montpellier wing Yoan Audrin.

The former Springbok lock will face an LNR disciplinary committee on March 5 after taking out Audrin without the ball during Toulon's 51-6 victory over Montpellier at Stade Felix Mayol last weekend.

In a bizarre twist of events, Audrin was shown a yellow card for (involuntarily) clattering into Toulon scrum-half Nicolas Durand in the air after being bumped off course by Botha, whose enormous frame obscured the referee's view.

The match was just Botha's second game back after a long lay-off following surgery on a fractured eye socket.

Meanwhile, Perpignan wing Adrien Planté will also appear before the disciplinary committee following his yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Toulouse wing Yves Donguy.

Since when did we need to see the footage to foem an opinion? What's this site coming to when a man (or a woman) can't form an opinion based entirely on bias, one-eyedness and pre-conceptions?!

I suppose both the referee and the citing officer were Kiwis.

@new_j4a - I should point out I've not seen the footage either, but prefer to call a spade a spade, or in this case a dirty thug. That's irrespective of this single incident.

@lawynd I certainly agree that he should be punished if he committed an act of foul play. I just see a tendency to "give a dog a bad name then hang him" I admit that I am biased (and perhaps hypocritical) when it comes to Bakkies....so I concede your point though I haven't seen the footage yet.

@new_j4a - where's the hypocrisy? From a few individuals perhaps (on both sides - see darthbok's inane reply) but by and large, we all condemn foul play and those that commit it where we see it. You won't see me defending Dylan Hartley for his brain implosions any more than I'd expect to see sensible people defending Bakkies, who lest we forget does have a deserved reputation for being a dirty thug.

@philipjfry: well, that was the return fixture...

To be fair, they might meet again in semi so you may have a point.

The kind of move that makes you hate or love the guy. Or both at the same time.

To be fair, that was just a very classic obstruction. Botha was very unlucky it turned with Duran almost injured. And very lucky to fool the ref in such a fashion.

By the way, hats off to the ref for apologising right after the match to Audrin once seen the full footage.

Phill_Moore says...

Is this the first time a guy manages a perfect snooker-like double take out? On two different teams?

I guess his team mate Durand must have pissed him off during practice, so he nailed both the opposition and him in one shot...

That's Bakkies, always innovating!

Did anybody see the footage before commenting?

@ArmchairGeneral: I disagree; you have to bury teams otherwise they come back stronger in the return fixture.

new_j4a says...

let's not forget that this is rugby....not netball. I see a bit of a tendency here to pile on where Bakkies is concerned....from Armchair critics ....yet we celebrate our hard men from the NH....hypocritical?

ArmchairGeneral says...

We can add "idiot" to his "thug" tag. 50-6. Complete dominance and absolutely no need for intimidation.

Just realise this was last week in the year 2013 lol...Obviously he's still alive and playing the same 'game', nothing new...

In only his second game back - what a surprise. When are serial offenders going to be dismissed from the game. They are too bit a risk with this incorrigible attitude.

Shock, horror......... and we all expected er, something else from Bakkies Botha? In fairness to the guy he has seemed to be out of trouble of late (probably because he hasn't been playing much) so this is quite good for him. Most of us expected this and more a lot sooner!
