Cowan out for six months

Jimmy Cowan Gloucester

Season over: Jimmy Cowan

Gloucester scrum-half Jimmy Cowan has been ruled out for at least six months with knee ligament damage.

The former All Black was injured during Gloucester's 27-11 win over Northampton at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday.

Director of Rugby at Gloucester, Nigel Davies, confirmed that Cowan would miss at least six months.

"He's very positive and just wants to play. He'll do whatever he can to get back sooner than that," said Davies to BBC Sport.

I'm pretty sure it's more to do with how tight the game is and how close to the breakdown the rugby is played in england, cowan is probably used to less attritional, faster paced rugby...and no it's not the turf because the gardens has probably the best looked after and maintained pitch in the premiership...

Between 8-10k in a 30,000 stadium down south or 15-25k stadia sellouts in the North. It's not the size of your stadia, it's how you fill them that counts.

Has nothing to do with NH v SH test results either.

Not the impact I had hoped for us after being an admirer of his play for Northland (?) and the Highlanders. I know it takes time bed in but his usual great sniping play has been a lot less eveident - probably due to their being less space around the breakdown in NH.

Hope he comes back fit and raring to go next season and proves his quality

Haha Leinster_goy - try the muddy boggy atrocious conditions. The stadia in NH are far smaller than SH which is in part the reason for less atmospheric conditions down sth. It's long been known the NH game is far slower with the intensity a millions miles off the SH game. SH players struggle to adapt to this aspect of the game. Don't believe me look at the stats for NH vs SH the results speak for themselves.

I recall some comments about running over the top of the ground in the southern hemisphere as compared to having to run through the turf in the uk and european grounds.

Don't know how true it is.

@leinster_goy lol Good one. Not hard to have atmosphere at tiny club grounds most places.

its amazing the number of SHers (especially kiwis) who come to play in the NH and then get seriously injured. carter at perpignan, berquist and roux at Leinster, lauaki at bayonne, payne at ulster, the list goes on. maybe SH players just can't cope with the pace and intensity of NH rugby. the electric atmosphere at matches in ireland, england and france must be a real culture shock for these guys who are used to playing in front of empty stadia
