Wales recall for lock Jones

12th February 2013 11:15

Alun Wyn Jones Wales RWC 2011

Recalled: Alun Wyn Jones

Ospreys second row Alun Wyn Jones has been recalled to the Welsh squad after making his comeback against Ulster last weekend.

Wales suffered an injury crisis ahead of the Six Nations, fielding the uncapped Andrew Coombs and Olly Kohn in their matchday squad aganst Ireland, so the news of Jones' return will be welcomed by Rob Howley and his coaching team.

Jones impact off the bench against Ulster was telling, with ten tackles in 31 minutes, and the Osprey has been tipped to tour once again with the Lions later in 2013.

Coombs and Evans have quickly built up an understanding in their two matches together and both were impressive against France in Paris last weekend.

However, given Jones' experience and influence on the side, Howley must now make a decision whether to start him against Italy in Rome.

Wales have an embarrassment of riches in the lock department: Alan Wyn Jones, Bradley Davies, Luke Charteris, Ian Evans... and now Coombs, who is one of the finds of the tournament. I always thought that Alan Wyn Jones would be skipper material. Health is always an issue and he might not have had the best in later years.

Bench for Italy, then to start against Scotland. At the end of the day he's the best lock in Wales and a shoe in for the lions squad as long as he's fit and has some rugby under his belt. He was outstanding for the 30 minutes he played against Ulster.

Wales have missed an on form AWJ (as they have missed a few 'on form' players). He is one of the senior players within the squad and ordinarily would be in the side. However, he like others have been either injured on not playing at all well. To talk of a Lions spot is massively premature as if the Lions were being picked now, he would be nowhere near it. He does have some time on his hands though to prove he is first of all worthy of a place in a poor Welsh side and then playing well for Wales. If I was him I wouldn't be thinking about the Lions and just get my head down and work blinking hard. He's got a lot to do.

Good news for Wales, but i wouldnt put him straight into the starting XV Evans and Coombs have done pretty well tgether so far,and have forged a decent partnership. So AWJ for me comes back on the bench .
