Billy Twelvetrees try celebration England v Scotland

Debut try: Billy Twelvetrees

A strong performance from England saw them defeat Scotland 38-18 at Twickenham to retain the Calcutta Cup.

The hosts enjoyed large portions of possession in both halves and arguably should have come away with more points, despite racking up four tries through Chris Ashton, debutant Billy Twelvetrees, Geoff Parling and Danny Care.

Scotland were not without their moments - a brilliant break from full-back Stuart Hogg leading to the first try of the afternoon for the visitors - but they were forced into defence too often and conceded needless penalties at the breakdown when momentum was behind them.

Owen Farrell produced one of his best displays yet in international rugby, a long pass securing England's third try, whilst Twelvetrees lived up to the billing he has been given in recent weeks in the build-up to the beginning of the Six Nations.

The victory means that England will travel to Dublin with confidence, but also aware that there is plenty to work on if they are to finish this year's championship with a title.

A burst from Ben Morgan set England on their way early on, winning the penalty phases later which Farrell converted for a 3-0 lead after two minutes.

England controlled the opening phases, going close with attacks from Wood and then Ashton with little errors causing them to lose possession - but it was a stunning break from Hogg that brought Scotland into the game as he scorched though frozen English tacklers and ended up close to the line.

Scotland controlled possession metres out before Greig Laidlaw drew the tackle of Geoff Parling to put Sean Maitland in the corner to score on debut.

Farrell responded with a penalty to give England a 6-5 lead. A loose pass from Richie Gray then put Scotland under intense pressure on their own 22, England winning the penalty at the breakdown for Farrell to add another three points.

England were immediately penalised from the restart for entering the side of a ruck, handing Laidlaw a penalty chance on the edge of the 22 which he duly converted to narrow the gap to a single point at 9-8.

The hosts struggled to convert several chances in the red zone before a chargedown off the back of Farrell created another opening - Twelvetrees gliding through a gap before Chris Ashton squeezed under two tacklers to score England's first try.

Neither side was able to establish a foothold in the opposition's half during the closing stages of the opening 40 minutes, until a high tackle on Morgan led to another penalty for Farrell to send through the posts.

Johnnie Beattie responded with a powerful run for the Scots which ended in a penalty nearly 30 metres out, Laidlaw converting to leave the score at 19-11 at the interval.

England started the second half with a bang - Billy Twelvetrees eventually crashing over for a try on debut after a great pass from Ben Youngs.

Farrell continued to turn up the pressure in an assured performance, pinning Scotland back into their half. Any momentum generated by the Scots a few minutes later was then killed off for a simple penalty, putting England back on the attack.

The hosts fluidity and power eventually proved too much for Scotland to handle, with Joe Launchbury appearing to cross over for a third try before the play was called back for a high tackle.

A burst from Ben Youngs however threw England back into Scottish territory, Farrell spinning a brilliant wide pass to Geoff Parling to go over in the corner for England's third try.

Scotland's defence continued to struggle throughout the second half, but a turnover near their own life breathed life into their attack, Alex Goode was wrapped up by four blue shirts to concede a penalty in his own half with Jackson kicking to the corner.

Their efforts though were in vain as replacement David Denton knocked on heading for the try line. The resulting scrum did not go England's way and Scotland had another chance, but their efforts once again were undone at the breakdown.

England continued to show the greater invention in attack but a breakaway score from Hogg gave Scotland hope - Maitland's kick gathered by the rapid Hogg who scored in the corner with Laidlaw converting.

An error from Mike Brown then saw him penalised for holding on inside England's 22, handing Scotland an opportunity with a five metre lineout which they failed to make the most of.

England switched the momentum back their way and finished things off with a fourth try in the 80th minute, replacement Danny Care sniping around the fringes to leave the final score at 38-18.

Man of the match: Excellent handling, pace and kicking from Billy Twelvetrees on debut saw him cap it off with a try on debut.

Moment of the match: After being disallowed a third try, Ben Youngs had Scotland scampering and ultimately led to the score from Geoff Parling, putting the game out of reach.

Villain of the match: Scotland's 19 missed tackles meant that today was always going to be a struggle.

Decent result but must agree with PR, England should have come away with more points as Scotland were dire in certain phases. Lots of heart but the chinks in the armour were all too obvious. I don't understand how that group of individuals can perform that badly as a team. England were good. Not great, but good. The work at the break down was a continuation of the NZ game but the cohesion in offence was a little off, probably due to new combinations. Ireland will be much a sterner test.

Goode has had some good games for England and not so long ago, many posters were lauding his performances and some even suggesting he should be a fly half. I've always thought that Brown is a better full back than Goode and I'm quite sure that Varndell is a million miles better than Strettle.

So I'd personally suggest the following changes for the Irish game :

Care to start

12Trees to move to IC

Manu to come back at OC

Varndell in for Strettle

Brown moves to FB, Goode to the bench

I don't think the scrum needs much tinkering about. I've always thought Parling was the weak link but maybe I was wrong. He's invaluable for his line out skills.

As for the Scots, don't knock Richie Gray. He saved Scotland on at least 2 occasions I can think of. Imagine him playing in a really powerful team. I feel sorry for the bloke. At international level, he's not going to experience winning very often and at club level he's experiencing defeat most of the time. Before long, this has got to start praying on his mind. I think he has the potential to be a really great lock but for his mental sake, if nothing else, he needs to be playing in a team that wins.

Apart from that, I think Scotland's greatest problem is their lack of depth. England can lose 2 or 3 good players and replace them with other good players. Scotland don't have this luxury.

I also watched the Wales Ireland game. Hats off to Brian O'Driscoll. What a magnificent player. If he maintains this form, he is a definite starter for the Lions and might well be the captain. When he retires, which I suspect will be soon, there will be a sad void not just in Irish rugby but in rugby in general. It was a joy to watch him today.

On the whole, pretty pleased. England shouldve cottoned on to the Rolland's attitude @ the breakdown, which cost us a lot. Was very impressed with Youngs, a lot of play came off him during the opening 50 - his best display in a while. We certainly struggled with any loss of structure, which ultimately led to their tries. The Scots bogged us down at times, but ultimately lacked the centre play to really hassle the England backs.12/T seemed a bit eager to make a statement in the first half, and was far more mature in the second. Maybe we'd see a more confortable performance from him when outside Freddie?

@porridge_time & cayzam, melkdave said more about rugby than either of you two prats. Have you heard about dyslexia? It's a bit like your stupidity, he can't help it.

Anyway, great game of rugby (excuse the fragment pedants). If England continues like this, they'll be in the top 3 in 2014.

@cayzam - I enjoy reading meldave's comments, even with spelling mistakes. However, there is one thing that does annoy me is his use of acronyms: imo = international money order, atm = automatic teller machine (bank in the wall machines!). I have yet to find one for tbh.

Meldave please keep posting.

Fair point about Gray have a reasonable game, but he was nothing flash. English forwards did make it hard for them. What Scotland really missed was Ross Rennie.

Scots were their own worst enemies losing possession at critical times or gifting penalties, but then England did have a decent amount of front foot ball and caused some pressure.

In all I'm not sure what (if anything) we learnt from this, Scotland are poor with a rookie coaching structure, England are settled but far from convincing. The real test comes next week (and in reality over at least the next year), until then the NZ result is a blip. There are a lot of questions England haven't answered and a lot of players who are far from convincing (let alone world class) in their position....captain included.

@ cayzam, always enjoy reading melkdaves posts, his enthusiam shines through and don't see what the problem is in anyones post with a spelling mistake or incorrect grammer. After all its a forum on rugby , not Eats, Shoots & Leaves. For the record i thought England had gone up a gear from the AB victory against a scottish side that were well up for it. Should have won by more though. Thought Beattie and Hogg put their hands up for the Lions today.

@porridge time: I thought Gray had a good game, with Beattie one of the few among the forwards to stand up in open play. His work rate in defense was huge. That said, I would understand if he were a bit tired, he already does all the job in Sale...

A good start, too many unforced errors. No one really played badly. Tom Wood deserves a mention for doing a lot of un-praised grunt work a'la Richard Hill.

The Irish will be a completely different proposition though, England will need to find an extra gear.

There was a big difference in the class of the two teams today. Promising though.

@meldave - sorry, but this threas was about England vs. Scotland and NOT England vs. New Zealand!

For today, what has SL learned???!?!??

Goode has no place in the squad

Brown is a full back

Marler cannot catch

And the arguments about Strettle etc. are almost void until next week...

Other than that, fair play to Scotland for making the game enjoyable (from a spectator perspective) and challenging (from Englands perspective)

Well done England. Lancaster doing a great job there. How many times were we killed from stupid turnovers? Our back row isn't right. Denton badly out of form and we miss Rennie. We need to play a fetcher so Fusaro should be considered. Beattie is class though. Liked 12trees for England but as a Scot I was proud of Hogg today, lovely to watch.
