Exile Shingler returns to Scarlets

Steven Shingler London Irish AVP 2012

Heading home: Steven Shingler

London Irish fly-half Steven Shingler will re-join former side the Scarlets next season on a three-year deal.

The 21-year old will be reunited with Wales international brother Aaron at the region, who has signed a three-year extension with the Scarlets.

Shingler, who has appeared 39 times so far for the Exiles, was named in Scotland's squad ahead of last year's Six Nations but was denied the opportunity to represent them by the IRB, having previously played for the Wales U20 side.

"Although I left the region, I've always remained a supporter and the Scarlets will always be a huge part of my life," said Shingler.

"You never lose that if you've grown up supporting Llanelli as a youngster - it's a strong rugby family and one of most passionate rugby communities around.

"I've had some great experience from my time at London Irish and it's been good for me to play in the intensity and physicality of the Premiership.

"During my time at London Irish, I've been lucky to work with and learn from some great people like Mike Catt who have pushed me forward and improved my game. My aim before leaving Llanelli was to get experience and plenty of rugby and I hope to achieve 50 appearances for London Irish and that can only be great experience for me going forward.

"I am very grateful to have this opportunity to come back to Wales and back to what I consider my rugby home; playing for a region I feel so strongly about and that has such devoted supporters.

"I've been following the Scarlets performances throughout and there's a very talented squad of players that I'm excited to be a part of. I look forward to working with the coaching set-up and I know from my brother how committed, close-knit and hard working the group at Parc y Scarlets is."

Wouldn't bet on getting english talent to develop and stay at your club, been doing that at Wuss for years but the players will be inevitably poached by Leics, Saints or Sarries

Funny how he claims he's excited to return to his rugby home and yet ruined his short-to-mid-range hopes of an international career by trying to flee the coup for Scotland.

Given the injury rate of the Welsh at the moment, I wouldn't bet against a call up.

Carnt really say i blame him, though it leaves Itish in a bit of a pickle,.Having left the Scarlets to further his international amnitions, and then finding them totally ruined by the WRU appeal to the IRB.He hasnt any other choice really but to go back to Wales,to try and further his international ambitions now and get on the WRUs good side.

Another player leaving Irish. We should focus on getting some young English talent to develop, try and instil some loyalty, and work from there. Follow the examples set by Harlequins and Wasps.
