Jones blasts "arrogant" England

Critical: Eddie Jones

Japan coach Eddie Jones has criticised Manu Tuilagi and England for the Leicester centre's celebration after scoring against New Zealand.

Tuilagi appeared to slow down as he neared the line after intercepting a pass from Kieran Read, with Jones regarding it as a mark of disrespect towards the world champions.

"England are still very young," Jones told The Daily Star.

"If they can keep it together and go on and pick up 600-odd caps then they could potentially have a very good team.

"But there were already signs of arrogance at the weekend with their centre [Tuilagi] walking over the line."

"That's disrespectful to the world champions - and if they don't control that kind of thing they will not go forward as a team."

"You don't want to see that sort of thing creep into the game because it's not good for rugby.

"It doesn't wind up other teams but the game of rugby is about respect - and that's one thing we simply must keep in the game."

"New Zealand have scored numerous points against numerous teams and you never see any of their players do that. They run hard and try to get under the posts to make the kick as easy as possible.

"So why didn't the England boy do that? That's what the game is about. It's very important to keep a tight lid on that kind of attitude.

"The only guy I really know in the England management is Andy Farrell and I know he certainly will not tolerate that sort of thing. He'll be disappointed by what Tuilagi did."

Kurtley Beale's 79th-minute dive was truly "respectful".

Chill folks - it's just Eddies opinion when it probably came up in an interview.

Lots of people do massive celebrations, it's not disrespectful just some people are SO pumped, they blow a fuse!

Seeing that Aussies are the most arrogant nation in the world (along with NZ and the USA) this is just hilarious

It's rare for a try scorer to keep sprinting when no one can tackle him. Often you see players walk to the posts and put it down slowly inviting a chaser. no issue. And my kids love the Ash Splash. Bigger concern was England players not trying to make the kick easier. Manu could have cut in sooner. Ash could have splashed towards the posts. We would have put 40 on the ABs and that IS unforgivable.

I think Tuilagi was a arrogant person before he joined the England squad. I thought the L sign he did when he scored was pretty arrogant. In the match interview after the game was wearing the Hilary shield hanging from his neck commenting on how heavy it was seemed pretty disrespectful.

Jones you got it wrong Tuilagi was at full speed, he was chased down by the boks hooker when he intercepted in that match.

Based on alot of the comments here, Ashton is doing neither himself nor England any favours with his swan dive. It only serves to fuel suspicions England are an arrogant team. He's going to lose control one day and it will be in a crucial game... I can see it now.

I did not find Tuilagi scoring arrogant, I thought all the players needed some oxygen at the end of a fantastic game in which nobody spared any energy. I thought he was quite tired.

Nobody like the way Ashton celebrates, fortunately it does not happen much often. Wish it could be possible to instal some glass on the tryline, but just for him.

This is hilarious. The statement itself is so very sad and stinks so much of sour grapes that it is in actual fact funny. Also, this is coming from Mr 'chip on my shoulder' Jones. It's Eddie Jones guys!! Aussies have enough chips on their shoulders to keep McCains in business for life and Eddie Jones is one of the worse. NOBODY has even mentioned this in any paper or thread until now. Then we bring in Ashton and it all kicks off with any SH troll that cares to comment. Have any NZ's, Aussies, SA's or in fact any other nation done this? YES!! But that is okay. I'm sorry that it upset poor little Eddie Jones but lets move on. There are also so many players that have done the swan dive in the present game and in the past that it is untrue. Ah, but it is an England player that has done it so it must be bad. Get a blinking life guys!!!

It's hilarious how the English here are complaining that no matter what they do they can't win. Pretty much how the All Blacks can do no right in the minds of the European fans and press when they tour.

Ashtons ridiculous over the top dives are certainly arrogant. Can't wait for him to lose the ball doing it.

@theshaw, Wrong. Wayne Barnes is the most annoying thing in rugby. WRT to Ashton, I hope I live long enough to see Ashton lose the ball mid flight, preferably in the RWC knockouts against the Boks in the final minute when they are 6 points behind....or similar. BTW, does anyone else miss the Breyton Paulse backflips?

Chubbylugs says...

I think it's more arrogant that 14 kiwi players didn't bother to chase back the interception. Unless he's being chased down, then why expend the energy? It happens in every other try in sevens. Disrespectful my ar$e

I think people are forgetting that Jones is an Australian and anything coming from his mouth should be taken with a pinch of salt. He is biased towards the Wallabies through and through and seeing England beat NZ has upset his idea that the SH teams are the best and are the only ones allowed to celebrate. Get a life Jones and focus on coaching Japan.

If I was as big as MT I would slow down as well!

@OzinLondon

Well just below your comment Jmehrtens gives an example of a new zealand player doing it...

Wow, if rugby fans are getting this sensitive then I weep for the game! Well no, I'll just be a little disappointed then move on with my life...

As for Tuilagi's hand gesture he was pointing to God. He thanks God after every try he scores, so let's not crucify him for it... bad word choice...

Big deal, much ado about nothing. Also, if i was opposing England i'd want Ashton to continue with the splash. Always a chance he'll drop it one day and boy will he be red faced if that happens.

carrobst says...

Oh please.... Do we really have to keep hearing the 'arrogant' epithet everytime England win...or in fact lose or draw? It just comes across as small-minded anti-English bias as usual.

God forbid England should ever celebrate scoring a try, let alone winning.

What we should do is run back to the halfway line looking suitably embarrassed and then apologise profusely to the opposition, the opposition supporters and the rest of the world just to be sure we've not offended anyone.

And lessons in being a better person...coming from Eddie Jones..................
