Jones blasts "arrogant" England

Eddie Jones Suntory coach 2011

Critical: Eddie Jones

Japan coach Eddie Jones has criticised Manu Tuilagi and England for the Leicester centre's celebration after scoring against New Zealand.

Tuilagi appeared to slow down as he neared the line after intercepting a pass from Kieran Read, with Jones regarding it as a mark of disrespect towards the world champions.

"England are still very young," Jones told The Daily Star.

"If they can keep it together and go on and pick up 600-odd caps then they could potentially have a very good team.

"But there were already signs of arrogance at the weekend with their centre [Tuilagi] walking over the line."

"That's disrespectful to the world champions - and if they don't control that kind of thing they will not go forward as a team."

"You don't want to see that sort of thing creep into the game because it's not good for rugby.

"It doesn't wind up other teams but the game of rugby is about respect - and that's one thing we simply must keep in the game."

"New Zealand have scored numerous points against numerous teams and you never see any of their players do that. They run hard and try to get under the posts to make the kick as easy as possible.

"So why didn't the England boy do that? That's what the game is about. It's very important to keep a tight lid on that kind of attitude.

"The only guy I really know in the England management is Andy Farrell and I know he certainly will not tolerate that sort of thing. He'll be disappointed by what Tuilagi did."

@ Rugby_rockstar - perhaps he and PdV could do a double-act on stage.

I think there are a few who could compose some classic Tweets about their show too...

@jamietheprop - a minor quibble but whilst their tails were, most definitely, between their legs. I think that you'll find that they were already at home.

Maybe Tuilagi's 'L' sign was actually meant for Jones - reminding him of a certain big game when our boys sent his boys home with their tail between their legs!

Quite simple: Eddie hates England and therefore perceives everything they do negatively. The ugliness is in his head. He has the horse before the cart. It's not English arrogance that causes the hate. It's hate that sees arrogance.

Jeez, some people have serious issues and need to grow a thicker skin.

Well....somebody must have told him after the game as he (Tuilagi) was less cocky in the last game against Treviso. He also got "tenderized" by some Treviso's players...hard tackles that is. In good hope, he will more disciplined the next 6N. ;-)

Wow one day away and I come back to this... the return of Eddie Jones.

Tuilagi has been pointing to God during or more usually after his scores for ages, not sure how you could mistake that for a disrespectful sign to the All Blacks. Both he and the guys who weren't chasing him were likely shattered so excuse me, Eddie if he didn't feel like sprinting the remaining 20 metres at blood-vessel bursting speed (when was the last time you ran that far?).

Smacks of a cheap way of getting a cheap shot on the English. I used to have quite a bit of respect for this guy. Pay more attention to the team paying your, probably significant wage, please Mr Jones. Get them moving up the standings.

@ flatline - I haven't "read" Viz for many years, although I did used to subscribe (I type, sitting here with a pair of underpants on my head and two pencils up my nose).

In all seriousness, I think we should all re-read Will Greenwood's article on the issue:

Storm in a teacup. I'm all for respect in the game, but talk about much ado about nothing? If anything it adds to the entertainment value. I don't believe that any particular nation is arrogant in the way they go about their business. Individuals maybe (QC), but as long as these guys don't start dropping like soccer flies and feigning injury then I'm OK with the "Ash Splash" and the odd cardinal sin. We'd have nothing to argue about if they weren't doing it.

Eddie Jones should concentrate on getting Japan outta 15th position on irb ranking and stop lecturing the brits on how they should score tries against the world champ
