No joke: Tonga beat Scotland
Tonga caused a massive upset in Aberdeen on Saturday, outscoring Scotland two tries to none to win 21-15 at Pittodrie.
Scotland led 6-3 at half-time but second-period tries from Tukulua Lokotui and Fetu Vainikolo saw the Pacific Islanders earn their first ever Test triumph on the European stage
Another miserable loss for Scotland means they are winless in November, leaving coach Andy Robinson's job hanging in the balance. They also finish the month outside the top eight seeds for the 2015 World Cup draw.
Greig Laidlaw kicked five penalties for Scotland, but the hosts were uninspired and ineffective on attack on the narrow pitch and were ultimately overpowered in an attritional affair.
Despite seeing three player sent to the sin bin, Tonga ran out deserved winners, claiming another big scalp after beating France at last year's World Cup.
The Tongans came out with all guns blazing and their rousing early endeavours forced the Scots into giving away a penalty as Al Strokosch illegally entered a ruck.
There was a reprieve for the hosts, however, when fly-half Fangatapu 'Apikotoa sent his 40-metre strike narrowly wide.
But they kept up the pressure and 'Apikotoa was handed an immediate chance to make amends from closer range.
And this time his aim was true to give his side the lead.
Scotland hit back positively and quickly with a promising raid, but there was more frustration as Laidlaw's angled penalty rebounded from the upright, allowing Tonga to clear the danger.
They maintained the momentum and a fine Laidlaw cross kick spread panic among the Tongan back ranks.
And the fly-half followed in the footsteps of his opposite number by banging over his second pot at goal in the 11th minute.
Tonga were posing plenty of problems when they were on the front foot, but Scotland looked sharp with the ball in the hands of the backs.
Their confidence was underlined as they opted to go for try points rather than another penalty.
Hooker Scott Lawson was driven over the line in the wake of a well-executed rolling maul, but the video referee ruled he had failed to ground the ball.
Only desperate defence kept out the Scots as they laid siege to the line during a series of scrums and further penalties.
Eight minutes of constant pressure yielded nothing for the home men and a tame turnover allowed the visitors to escape from their danger zone.
It was then Scotland's turn to show off their defensive strengths as Tonga mounted a spate of raids.
But soon the Scots were back on the offensive thanks to a lightning break through the middle by Laidlaw.
He was involved again in the next phase, but yet again Tonga backtracked to mop up.
Scotland were given further incentive seven minutes before half time when lock Lokotui was sinbinned for dangerous tactics in the line out.
Prop Halani 'Aulika was perhaps fortunate to dodge the same punishment for a no-arms body check on Matt Scott.
Having failed to breach the visiting markers, Scotland resorted to the boot - Laidlaw's penalty giving them the edge.
The action continued to be disjointed and untidy after the restart.
But the crowd volume rose when Sean Lamont bashed his way down the middle to create a clear-cut chance.
They couldn't turn the good work into a touchdown, but collected another three points from Laidlaw's accuracy.
And there was more breathing space for Scotland when 'Apikotoa was short with his next attempt at the sticks.
The contest burst into life in the 51st minute as Tonga snatched a surprise lead. Lokotui more than made up for his yellow card by burrowing over for a try from point-blank range, giving 'Apikotoa a simple conversion.
Laidlaw instantly eased the Scots' anxiety by adding penalty number four - and repeated the dose midway through the half.
But still Tonga looked more clinical in attack and 'Apikotoa narrowed the gap with his next strike.
Even better was to come for the tourists as winger Vainikolo left his cover for dead with two dazzling dummies and galloped in for a superb solo try from his own half.
The tension level soared when debut substitute Tom Heathcote watched in agony as his first shot at goal dipped under the crossbar.
And Scotland's task became a lost cause as 'Apikotoa found the target again.

The Pacific Islanders are now the next ones to deserve a regular competition. Between Tonga and Samoa, they have beaten FOUR tier 1 nations in the space of just 2 years (remarkable when you realise the limited amount of matches they have had against tier 1 nations). They have slayed France, Australia, Wales, and now the Scots.

I'll say one thing, The Lions chances have taken an almighty beating this autumn.
I think most people saw the Lions as favourites in July with Oz struggling and getting nilled in one game.
By the end of the championship I had seen enough to say that oz have the mental strength and guts to make it a damn close series. THEN they drew with NZ
Right now at the end of November the home nations are looking pretty rubbish, While Oz, still understrength, have again shown really determination and guts.
Look at the irb world seedings, not just Oz bu where the home nations are too... they aren't lying and The lions are going to be in trouble if they stroll down to australia expecting to dominate up front and romp to a win. The results on the pitch do not back up that fairy tale.

Italy beat Tonga fairly comfortably, so I decided to watch Ireland Vs Argentina instead. In the end Ireland played magnificently and destroyed the pumas within 20 minutes and all the while a rugby classic was going on on the red button!!!
GUTTED. ;)

Samoans and Tongans or New Zealanders or Australians with Samoan and Tongan heritage + Start in the SH training/development/Running style rugby in Super Rugby then moving on the next step in the NH clubs intake/NH hemisphere Rugby, forwards oriented game/Set piece precision.. End product = Ikale Tahi and the Manu Samoa .. We definitely got the best of both worlds with a combination of skills, defense, solid set piece combining it with their island style of running Rugby

great result and thooughly well deserved by tonga ... last time a NH hemisphere team lost to tonga that team went on to a world cup final which they very nearly won, so maybe its the start of great things for scotland....not sure robinsons the man to take scotland to great things though.

Spam, it's only their third meeting in 17 years so i don't think the previous history card has much validity....it wasn't a shock for anyone who watches both SH and NH rugby....

NZ, Samoa and Tonga could all be top tier sides - maybe 1.2 3. They all come from the same stable - NZ schools and clubs - coaching and culture. Far from harming PI, as has been suggested, NZ rugby has strengthened it beyond the critics belief.

@atg77 says..."Easily most embarrasing result in Scottish rugby history".....what are you on about? Scottish rugby...is pretty consistently...well embarrassing. Is there a team that has never beaten you? Tonga is a pretty averagely decent side. you should celebrate that you held up as well as you did?

Super Tonga, this has been the year for the PI teams and lets face it they can only thank the NH clubs that take them on and hone their natual abilities. What we are really seeing in these teams is the SH (New Zealand) and NH influence coming together. Looks pretty impressive to me.

I say this very clearly: This is not to take anything away from Tonga at all and also I predicted this kind of result before the game in the preview section, but still I am 100% sure that that final scrum (where Scotland were pushing forward for the 2nd time after a penalty at the previous scrum and the ball spilled out at the back / side) would have been a penalty try or at the very least another penalty had it been Engalnd or France playing against us. Again, not saying it was undeserved, but I believe the "upset" kind of intrigued a certain referee, too...

This is the kind of side and the kind of rugby that @bimbo deserves.....probably take till Wednesday before the small boys with whom he has a touching relationship to explain that Scotland is still crap

Tonga are not a bad team. Check the rankings! Still a bad result for Scotland given the way they played against NZ and SA.

Easily most embarrasing result in Scottish rugby history. With the possession and territory we had, we should have easily beaten them. Shockingly unacceptable handling errors proved very costly, as did the continual insistance in kicking away possession with these ridiculous up-and-unders. Robinson's baffling selections and poor use of subs is costing us dearly. sending on Heathecote just so he would be tied to Scotland is unbeleivable. Laidlaw's experience might even have seen us through. We all know Max Evans is not a centre... yet he gets picked. We need to clear out the old wood and bring in the young guys... say goodbye to Lamont, Deluca and Evans... bring in Bennet and Maitland... shift Hogg to outside centre and Laidlaw back to no.9 and we'll have the makings of a decent team. Robbo's never going to get his selections right, might be better to promote Scott Johnson as head coach and Matt Taylor as his assistant.

Just read the match report looking forward to checking out the game at some stage. well played Tonga ,the situation with them,Fiji and especially Samoa cannot be ignored after any longer its bordering on the criminal that these teams continue to be overlooked.

Scotland have been slipping further and further down the pecking order with Robinson at the helm. New competent coaches required in Edinburgh, Glasgow (although their current form is decent) and national set-up.

Agree with spam. Scotland dominated posession and territory in the first half and should have buried Tonga. Those PI players have massive heart and great skills, credit to them to play like that on a bitter raw day in Scotland. As for Scotland it is still a learning process seeing us waste that last attacking scrum still makes me hold my head in my hands.
