Etzebeth cited for gouging

19th November 2012 16:51

Eben Etzebeth South Africa 2012

In hot water: Eben Etzebeth

Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has been cited for making contact with the "eye or eye area" of Scotland fly-half Greig Laidlaw.

The alleged incident occurred in the second-half of South Africa's 21-10 victory at Murrayfield on Saturday.

21-year-old Etzebeth will appear before an International Rugby Board disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.

South Africa play England at Twickenham on Saturday.

The IRB's recommended sanctions for any player found guilty of 'eye-gouging' range from a low entry point of 12 weeks to a high entry point of 24 weeks with a maximum possible ban of three years.

Meanwhile, Argentina prop Juan Figallo has been cited for head-butting France captain Pascal Pape at the end of the Pumas' 39-22 defeat in Lille on Saturday.

Figallo's hearing is listed for Wednesday. Argentina face Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.

new_j4a aka Justice_4_all - In your comment to me you act as though you are the moderator/enforcer of the PR pages! Get a grip, old fellah.

This whole discussion here seems to primarily revolve around the conduct of some PR posters. I applaud the real moderators for allowing it to continue. Afterall, it is exposing the rank hypocrisy of some in the PR community, yourself included.

It appears okay for self declared rugby lovers to recently hurl invective and insult at others (French players, fans and even the entire nation - see RWC final ad nauseum) whilst for the same offence (though in this case actually cited!?) those same 'lovers' restrain themselves more recently with gentle soothing words worried more about the future of the the possible perpetrator than the possible victim (see your own honeyed words)!

You level 'hypocrisy' at others but fail to see it in yourself. Beam and mote, old man, beam and mote.

APV1 and others are learning that there is a huge difference between 'thinking' something (private and internal however nasty it is) and 'writing or saying' something online. Look at recent events with Twitter in the UK and you realise that if you sound like an ass out loud then you'll be called an ass. Saying 'but it was just a joke' or 'I didn't mean it' or 'You didn't understand me' are simply not up to it as a defence.

An SA gouger deserves just the same as a French gouger. Neither deserves to have their country, their people or their culture slagged off. You know that and so does APV1, even if he was trying (badly) to make just that point.

Case closed....and you know it.

Etzebeth found not guilty. Free to play England this weekend. Sanity prevails. Be scared pommy.

@ Spartacus - sorry, I missed another point. I cannot take the credit for the unity, I just pointed out that it was good to see.

@ Spartacus - I've only seen very inconclusive versions on various sites (Rugby Dump, for example), so I can't comment on what happened.

In fact, you'll notice that my comments on the specific incident have been conspicuous by their absence.

Contact between various parties? No idea.

Is he guilty of gouging? No idea.

Will SA give us a hiding on Saturday, or we will avenge (see what I did there again - I must be on a roll with this?!) the summer tour? Let's wait and see...

Just watched the "incident" on Rugby Dump, what a complete load of bollocks if he does get banned.

APV1.

I suspect that it is about expectations, right or wrong.

We do not expect much from some posters (who I normally overlook), we expect more from guys like you.

You made a point and I am happy that it was not a "mediocre" one, for a change.

Finally, we all must come to terms that the rugby brotherhood is not that heaven on heart and that unfair situations do happen (especially if you wear France, or Italy or Bok shirt).

@APV1 - I should add, whilst I dont mind you baiting BokAvenger (a hopeless activity with that sort of person), in this instance maybe you could have taken a step back and asked whether there is a question to be asked of the RFU?

Was there contact between citing officer and HQ during the citing period?

You pat yourself on the back for uniting everyone against gouging, but on the face of it Etzebeth has not done anything of the sort. The only good thing to come out of this will be from Englands perspective, as SA preparations will be seriously disrupted. So we all agree that gouging is bad, so now talk about this specific incident?

@Spartacus (No, I'M SPARTACUS!) - of course not; it's incredibly rare that you see a fend where the attacking player puts his fingers in the eye area of the defending player.

I'm not condemning Etzebeth because I haven't seen anything to suggest he's guilty - I only saw highlights of the game. Apologies if that wasn't clear from my post. I'm merely pointing out that he hasn't been accused of attempting to rip someone's eye out of their socket, more having his hands in a dangerous place. If he hasn't done it then I hope the 'guilty before proven innocent' brigade feel sufficiently embarrassed (they won't), if he has then whatever the reason, he deserves 12 weeks.

@Spartacus...oh give me a break, you must be claiming to be purer than the driven snow....or a hypocrite? Have you never had an even slightly racist or unfairly stereotypical thought? In South Africa? You must be very, very young?

@APV1, I spotted your windup straight away....didn't need to read the last line....have read too many of your previous posts to be taken in by a BokAvenger like pseudo rant. As a Saffa, I can only apologize for the likes of BokVanDumb and his new incarnation BokAvenger (he educated himself by reading comics, thus the name). The rest of us were just a little trigger happy and got taken hook, line and sinker.

I watched the evidence.. Nothing in it. It was part of the tackle and no intent or gouging. So where is the announcement!???? There wont be one because its a farce!!!

@ Spartacus - my point was that all we seem to ever hear from BokAvenger is nonsense, spewed-bile and conspiricy theories. I was highlighting how easy it is for these things to be typed and "out there in cyber-space", with the consequences not really considered.

I certainly don't believe all Saffas are the same, nor that any group of people are all the same.

"You have to think that to write it, so the sentiments obviously run deep within you."

Nope, you don't:

ALL ORANGES ARE SKY-BLUE PINK WITH PURPLE SPOTS.

I typed it, but I don't think it's true. In fact, I know it isn't. But that didn't stop me typing it. I suppose I did "think" it in a cerebral sense, but there's a difference between that and believing it to be true.

So no, the sentiment does not run deep. I'll accept that there have to be similarities within groups - the definition of the raison d'être of any group, I suppose, is a common cause or purpose - but the individual members are not the same. Theories of Group dynamics explain the "lifecycle" of a group (Forming > Storming > Norming > Performing); and the forming part requires some commonality.

Perhaps the vitriol focused on my comments and at me (rightly so), just goes to illustrate the point further.

Why should we accept the shite BA spouts on a rugby forum? And if we do, then we have to expect (and accept) all points of view, regardless of how vile or abhorent they may be.

Some of the keyboard warriors are up in arms about my post, but conveniently overlook BA's (and others'). Mine was a deliberate (and successful) attempt to provoke a reaction, in order to illustrate a point. What's his excuse?

But the other good thing about this thread is the united front shown by the real rugby fans. As a group (d'ya see what I did there?) we all condemn gouging and hope that any incidents of it are punished and firm, long sanctions handed out.

Phew!

Spartacus says...

@lawynd - that will be the end of the hand off then will it? This is nonsense and I think you know it (notwithstanding seeing new evidence which shows a transgression).

lawynd says...

Bear in mind chaps, Etzebeth hasn't been accused of eye-gouging, but of making contact with the eye area. Just having your hands in that area is enough to draw a sanction and, due to the possible consequences, quite rightly so.

I have not seen "the incident" occur, but have to admit i switched to ENG vs. AUS at halftime.

eye-gouging is bed, its worse then biting. Still, i found that quite often people tend to over-interprete unlucky handling into eye-gouging.

But it is true: Ebenneeds to make up his mind in what kind of player he wants to develope reputationwise, apart from the tactical role: Matfield or Bakkies.

i thought he was more mature allrteady:

http://www.ballz.co.za/video-of-the-day.php

It¿s quite clear that there is no ¿gouging¿ of the eye area at all. Furthermore, once Etzebeth realizes his hand is in Laidlaw¿s face he immediately pulls it away.

If anything, the young tyro should be congratulated for, firstly, holding up the Scottish maul almost singlehandedly and secondly, having the moxy, while in the heat of battle, to remove his giant mit from the Scotsman¿s kisser.

Citing Commissioner: Alan Mansel of England. South Africa¿s next opponents: England.

Hmmmm¿
