All Blacks fly-half Dan Carter will not be rushed back into action by Steve Hansen, who said he will give his 10 more time to recover from a calf strain.
Hansen revealed on Sunday that Carter, the world's leading points-scorer in Tests, is not being considered for the clash with the Boks.
His place will again be taken by Chiefs playmaker Aaron Cruden, who had a shaky game against Argentina in testing conditions in Wellington.
New Zealand beat the Pumas to remain unbeaten after three rounds of the Rugby Championship.
"He's getting older isn't he and the more you play the game the more vulnerable you are to injury and he's got quite a few miles on the clock," Hansen said of Carter in assessing his fitness.

Please do back up your captaincy row claim. Your credibility is at stake.

georgesmith can you please explain what you mean by DC being upset with the captaincy row? What captaincy row is there in NZ? The only captaincy row is in your own head about Australia. Even there, there is no row as Nathan, remember his name Nathan Sharpe is the only contender.
@rolf if you think it is only PDV fault for sticking with the older players too long then you are misguided. You are missing the horrible out of date tactics Meyer is making the Boks play to. Either that or they are ignoring his game plan. I think it is the former as the game plan doesnt exist once the opposition sort out how the Boks are playing. By the way georgesmith you are right about Goosen but alas what is the use with a coach like Meyer as he is a control freak. If Goosen gets the job will Meyer allow him to play his natural game or shackle him and ruin his individuality and flair. I fear it will be the latter.

The backline doesn't seem as clinical without Dan, but I guess it's a good chance for Cruden and Barrett to show everyone what they're made of, they were both exceptional in the Super Rugby comp. but test rugby is a whole new ball game....goodluck guys

Rested for what? I think he can manage playing 3 matches in the space of 4 weeks.

In the second half in Wellington as the weather abated Cruden improved. His long looping pass to Cory Jane was pure class. Under the roof in Dunedin I can see the hapless Bokes getting turned insides out by Cruden.

Why don't they just tell the truth and admit he's being rested?
Because he is injured!
You really need to let your AB envy go... as it just comes across as bitterness.

DC seems to be unhappy with the captaincy row going on in the background. With or without DC, ABs will still embarrass the Africans. Springboks need some attacking flair and J. Gooen is thhe guy for it.

well it clearly shows the awe the bokke are currently producing in their opponents.
its a shame - but very deserved, given the rugby they produce.
and its pretts much PdVs fault who stuck with Jake Whites old guns fo four long years too long.
Lets see if Meyer can eventually come back withh a bok side who deserve to wear the jersey. For a start, he should put HIS 10 to a rest,,,

I think they could play pretty much any 10 in NZ over the age of 16 against South Africa the way they are playing at the moment, they wouldn't know how to exploit an advantage even if the NZRU wrote to them and told them about it the week before. Cruden deserves more game time on his Super rugby form, he hasn't yet received the rewards for his good work yet which was head and shoulders above that of Barrett

Personnally i dont think DC is being rested, ever since the RWC he has struggled with grion and calf strains.NZ are just being pragmatic imo,why risk one of your players ,when he isnt quite 100%.Espically if you feel you have a good replacement

@atg that is what they are doing resting him so his injury heals properly. We all saw what happened to O'Connor when he was rushed back he has spent longer on the sidelines. What is wrong anyway with revolving your players if the management want to rest one of their most important player it is their judgement or loss whatever and must give a bit of help to the opposition.

The AB coaches are going to play Carter as sparingly as poss to see if they can get him thru a few more seasons. Keep their powder dry somewhat for the big games that come along. And at same time see if either Cruden, Barrett can get somewhere near Carters level in the next few seasons( b4 2015 WC).It would be great if they could get Carter to 2015 reasonably intact...... Ahh such is life when you have options.....
