This is completely out of leftfield. Genius signing by munster. SARU and the Bulls must have been asleep at the wheel when this happened. Just how bad are player salaries in the SH? Or are some guys just ambivalent about playing for South Africa a la Luke Watson?

@boksmashoffice, kiwilad

Munster had bad luck with Denis Leamy, David Wallace and Quinny who all retired recently and were effective in the back row. David and Quinny still had maybe 1-2 years in them but injuries forced them to end their rugby careers. I think James Coughlan's and Nial Ronnan will also have to leave in a few years since they'r a bit old and Im not sure about this but I think they'r also injured. So all we have now is O'Donell who hasnt seen much game time with 1st team, Donnacha Ryan who is played in second row and O'Mahony who is a young talent.

Papachinzo, exactly which part of the IRFU's foreign player policy has this breached? He is the project player for Munster, a player who can come in and potentially be eligible to play for Ireland in 3 (or 4, can't remember which) years. Every province is allowed one.

@kid_diablo: Emerging Boks is a development side and doesn't prevent a player from playing for another country

The senior sides are:

Springboks

SA A (Used to be Junior Boks - not u/20/21)

SA Sevens

BTW I confirmed it this morning with SARU

WOW what a great signing :) the partnership of Munster and Blue Bulls is starting to flower.

kid_diablo says...

@boksmashoffice: you'd be wrong, emerging boks are counted as your second team. so yes after 3 years he would be eligible

Stander isn't closing any doors but he can eventually qualify for Ireland if he wishes as he hasn't played for the Boks, SA A or the Blitzbokke (I confirmed with SARU that these three sides would disqualify him from playing for Ireland, u/20 Bokke doesn't)

At the Bulls he's behind Pierre Spies, Jacques Potgieter, Dewald Potgieter for a regular spot so a short term move makes sense. A pity but he needs to look for regulkar playing time.

where will this guy be when we need to beat the ABs or Boks. SH have their priorities right, national rugby should come first. We have enough Heineken Cups now.

boksmashoffice says...

@kiwilad. The reason why he has been signed is because Munster have not developed quality back rowers. They want to be successful in Europe. The only saving grace is that the national back row is made up by Leinster and Ulster players.

FTM89 says...

I will blame this as the first management mistake that HM made....Stander had a munch better season as Jacques Potgieter but still HM choose to go with Potgieter...He is still very young and HM told SARU that he will choose players from overseas... So Stander still stands a change of becoming a Springbok but his chances is defiantly smaller...

So much for the IRFU's foreign player policy, it seems to be thrown out the window every time Munster want to sign someone...

why?

JayStarr says...

Now that's not very smart of him... You've got a chance to play for the Springboks, then you run after money. (I don't care if he says it's not for the money - I very much doubt whether his dream has always been to play for Ireland...)

Good riddance is all I can say in that case. This will only open the door for another talented youngster to come through.

ruggaluva says...

Wow thats a bit of a strange decision... he had a promising future with the Bulls and maybe even an inside track to a bok jersey at some point too - not anymore.

besides one or two years of that kak weather and he will be right back ( at the back of the queue)

Great news for Irish rugby... Yet another SH player fills the spot a young, up and coming Irishman could fill????

boksmashoffice says...

This is not good. Stander was a great prospect for SA. Hopefully 2 years in Europe will stand him in good stead. I am assuming that Ireland cannot nick him in a few years because he has played for Sa under 20's. good luck to the young fella.

this guy is a beast at only 22, some hard hitting performances so far this season. Will tear it up in europe next season!

GCP_JONES says...

I have only seen high lights of his performances, can any Bulls/Springbok fans give us a heads-up about the player?.

Judging by the article its exactly what Munster needs in their back row.
