SaffaStormer says...

Fine choice and one that could have been disasterous (Pierre Spies - Shudder). JdV is a well respected leader amongst the SA players and is a gentleman on and off the field. Remember his gesture during and after the Stormers/Highlanders game?

Nice one JDV!

Happy for JDV he has been a boks stalwart for years ,and is a popular choice overall.But i do feel that Bismarck is the natural captain for 2015

I think he's a good leader, but always believed a captain should be someone in the engine room....but then who from the forwards would you choose? Good luck to Jean, I hope he pulls this squad together and gets the best out of them. Maybe with a captain in the back-line of a team that's perceived to play forward dominant rugby, he may be the catalyst to swing game plans towards a running game?

A great choice and he comes across as a good man, very much like all the South African players.

JayStarr says...

I'm very happy for Jean, but let's not forget that if Heyneke had his way, a Bull would've been captain. Luckily (for us) Victor wasn't allowed to play, and Fourie du Preez did Heyneke Meyer's job for him by saying that he's not right to play.

So Heyneke Meyer is doing exactly what everyone said he was going to do, which he denied all the way, but then did: all his coaches are Bulls, half the Springbok squad are Bulls and his captain would've been a Bull. And the best team in South Africa over the last two years, and current leader of the South African conference, the Stormers? They have 3 players in the Bok squad - equal to the amount of players from the Bulls reserves bench.

It's beyond a joke. If Meyer goes ahead and picks Zane Kirchner at fullback, as they've been training today, then that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me... Then I'd rather cheer for the English.

I think we all know that he is just a provisional captain.... still its a massive feather in de Villiers's cap. Good luck to him its a hell of a task being Bok captain.

rolf says...

we probably all agree this is an intermediate choice on the path of lowest resistance.

JdV is agood player and man, but beyond his prime.

I will put my money on BISMARCK for RWC captaincy. he is the leader of the boks to be.

Carpelone says...

I think it is a sensible choice. He is a respected man, whose only blank dot in his career was the Munster's move (he costed him two years to regain an acceptable form).

Past his prime, yet one of my favourite players.

Still shocked/surprised by the overall selection, never thought I would have regret PdV.

Brussow and de Jongh should have been in the mix, too many dull bulls.

@jonesy2

He is the best choice.... experienced and done a great job captaining the Stormers...

P.S. I'm a bulls fan... and no, it should have not have been Spies, not even sure Spies is good enough to start

Sasquatch says...

@Jonesy2:

He's been by far the popular choice in every single online vote I've seen in SA. Though Bulls fans will obviously disagree.

i would love to see what the springboks fans think of this because to me it seems like an odd move..

Jean de Villiers played poorly in Ireland - put on the bench for Munster! I had such hope in Heyneke Meyer, but his squad is biased to the Bulls and appears to be selected on reputation over form (Kankowski in particular). Jeez - it is so hard supporting the Boks. They just break your heart over and over.
