Much needed signing, but more must follow - and there's a lot of deadwood to move on....Flatman (retired tk goodness), Vesty, Taylor, Cuthbert, Beattie (ret also), Skirv, Hipkiss etc etc etc.
Time for Bath to realise Props who can get round the park and be really effective in the loose, are of no use in the premiership if they can't scrummage.

@ DropZone62 - fair enough that you think he's a knobend then. If he stamped on the arm of one of my favourite players, I would too. Let's hope he redeems himself with you, as I think he's a great player with bags of international potential.

@APV1 well I honestly haven't seen him much, but the only time ive seen him is when he stamped on Ferris' arm, and i LOVE Ferris so...

@sirtidychris - fair enough. Not sure why you directed the comment at me since I was talking about English rugby, but at least we agree on somethings.
@danatthecorner - not a very balanced series of comments. Perhaps you'd like to name some other props at clubs like Harlequins, Saracens, Leicester etc - bad luck!! Pull the other one - very funny. Just look at what is in front of you. Glad you admit there are problems elsewhere, which was my main point. I wasn't specifically commenting on props, as you would be aware if you re-read my initial post.

@makemehappy
Just like you said english rugby lacks depth at prop, i'm saying the welsh team does of which we are in agreement.
I agree with you that england rugby has a problem but its not a lack of talent it picking our best players and developing them.....we have a huge player pool...but over the past decade coaches have stuck with the old guard when guys like simpson-daniel, nick wood, antony allen, steffan armtigae etc etc needed to be getting game time instead of the 2003 has beens.

@sirtidychris - at no time did I suggest there was strength in depth in Welsh rugby, so not really sure what on earth you are talking about with your first comment! In fact I will openly say there isn't sufficient depth, especially with all the french teams plundering out players. Wales hasn't the financial resources to hold onto players.
If I was a Bath fan I'd agree that he was a good signing. I think you seem in your final paragraph to then agree with me that there is a problem in English rugby.

I seem to remember it wasn't that long ago that the Welsh were trying to give Deacon Manu a cap...thats hardly prime welsh strength in depth, to be honest when jenkins and or jones are injured things aren't so rosy.
I don't think Bath have enough strength in depth on the scrummaging prop front(we have mobile ball playing props coming out of our derriere) so James is a cracking signing.
In regards to England props...asides from the aforementioned we have young bucks coming through the ranks like mako Vunipola, Kyle sinclair, rupert harden, simon macintyre etc etc so not worried at all. With england we have good players all over the shop we just have trouble converting that to international quality...i think cause wales/ireland have a more selective player pool you are good at developing guys (sticking with them) and getting them used to playing at international level. In england we build a player up to the nth degree give them one or two England games then drop them when they aren't instantly amazing e.g steffan armitage, anthony allen, nick kennedy, shane gegarthy, danny cipriani, early matthew tait etc etc.

@ makemehappy - I'm not going to, I'm sorry to say. But I will refer you to danatthecorner's post, rather than listing them all again. The fact that Bath have made it more attractive for him to play in England than in Wales needs to be addressed by the WRFU and the Welsh clubs. Don't begrudge them recruiting available talent, regardless of the depth available in England.
England have significantly more depth than Wales, but that doesn't mean that at club level, the clubs aren't going to look elsewhere too. I don't know which club you support, but I can guarantee that there are "foreign" players there. Does that show a lack of depth in Wales. Actually it probably does, especially as all the good players have left and are playing in England or overseas.

@APV1 - I would have thought it was fairly clear. It lacks depth suggests there are too many foreign players! Far too many for such an ambitious country. Who are the top sides - lets say Leicester and Saracens. How many imports there? Rather a lot.
You must have a big backside as there is a distinct lack of depth!
Of course you could also (not sure how you missed this) have noted that there are too many teams!!!! Brilliant demonstration of being able to multiply by the way. That backside of yours is an arithmetic genius!
So before you go shooting off again, have a think about matters.
Frankly I enjoy England having too many foreigners, as that means a weaker national team for the Welsh boys to play. So I like the lack of depth generally, unfortunately not at the expense of Welsh clubs.

@ makemehappy - "lacks depth"..? I'm not sure of your point. There are 12 teams in the AP, all requiring at least 2 TH and 2 LH. That's at least - hold on, let me do the maths here.... 24! - 24 TH and 24 LH in the AP (let's not worry about the other leagues which also require props, as it might confuse you). Does England have depth to cover all of those? Probably not at international standard, but at club level yes. But why not recruit an international prop to prop up the squad (d'you see what I did there?!)? It's not demonstrating a lack of depth, it's demonstrating a need for quality props in the squad. Chuck in a couple of injuries and the requirement of 2 quickly becomes 3 or four. Then there's international duties and 3 or 4, may become more. Lack of depth my backside.
@ DropZone62 - I was being facetious. That said, why do you think he's a "knobend"? Genuine question.

A good signing for Bath and @Makemehappy England do have good quality front row players comming through ,its experiance James gives and that does make a differance .He also gives depth to Baths FR dont forget Bell is retiring and Barmes ,Wilson is injured ect As to the rest of the team agree a good flanker and center would help Baths cause no end ,and a young SH

@Makemehappy - "proof that English rugby lacks depth"
How so? Because they signed a test player from another country? Pull the other one mate. 11/12 Aviva teams currently have a past England, current England or Saxons prop of the last 3 years:
Bath: Catt, Wilson
Gloucester: Wood
Harlequins: Marler
Leicester: Cole
London Irish: Corbisiero
Newcastle: Golding
Northampton: Doran-Jones
Sale: Sheridan, Thomas
Saracens: Stevens
Worcester: Mullan
We may suffer from a lack of depth but its not in the front-row, and Bath signing Paul James isn't evidence of it.

@APV1 why do you need second rows? attwoods good, even though hes a knobend, and caldwells very very good. You have francis louw whos class, maybe need one more flanker ill give you that. Ah cmon Donald or Heathcote , and Classens? class halfbacks you're grand there, For me the backline should be (9) Classens (10) Donald (11) Banahan (12) Vesty (13) Sign a big ball carrying centre like a no'nu or something allow those lines (14) Cuthbert (15) Abendenon.

Good news. We need some more quality in the FR and he certainly is quality.
Just the 2R, BR, 1/2 backs, centres and back 3 to sort out now.
