it should be pointed out that Planet Rugby have actually misquoted Mealamu here. PR say that Mealamu said "He's a player that we can definitely do without though".
According to the NZ papers and radio website Mealamu actually said
"From the team's point of view, he's a player we could definitely do with OUT THERE".
I think this puts a kind of different slant on Mealamus comments. More of an encouragement to get fit than a dig to a fatty. Maybe Planet Rugby should do a bit of research or proof read better?

I can only imagine that one or more people have tried to make weepu do something about his fitness and that they've all been told where to go. So they're now at the last chance saloon. If not, then to say this sort of thing about a team mate in public is pretty awful. I can't recall such a public slamming of a team mate. Imagine the team spirit at the Blues after this. It seems also as if Mealamu is being quoted and that it isn't your usual media exaggeration.
Thatllbeme - daft comment. BoD is a great player and never moaned about that spear tackle. And if you think he's a poof you've clearly not seen his girlfriend - absolute stunner.

Airing a team grievance in public is in line with Mealamu's dubious character. He's just a bitter guy with less talent than contemporary AB hookers like Anton Oliver and Andrew Hore. Hore was badly mistreated by the Hurricanes but he rose above it and didn't go to the media whinging. That type of decency is beyond a toad like Mealamu.

best/funniest comment on Planet Rugby in years!!!!

@thatllbeme
in BODs defence, he never goes on about the incident. He has come out and said he has met bout Kiwis and shaken hands since. Don't get leinster_goys typical D4 attitude confused with what has actually happened. BODs is as tough as nails, you never hear him complain.

Must be the meat pies. Two meat pies for lunch each day with fish and chips and a few beers for dinner and that's worth at least 10kg in two weeks.

@justice_4_all says... Yeah he definitely needs to get into shape if he even wants to still be making this Blues side lol.. But isn't it interesting that last year's two best half backs in New Zealand are now sitting on the bench for their respective Super Rugby teams this year?.. It'll be interesting who they will pick for the AB's this year..

Looks like Andy Ellis has a clear run to the All Black Jersey with Cowan and Weepu sitting on the bench? Also an opportunity for young talent to come through Aaron Smith and Kerr Barlow in particular? What does everyone else think?

I was impressed by Weepu when he changed body sahpe over the close season, just after he arrived on the scene. Really worked at his fitness and shape to get into the AB's.
maybe now he is there, he thinks he doesn't have to do the hard graft anymore?
Looks like he likes his pies too much!
Must say during my trips to NZ it is one of the best memories of home, a real comfort food!
During my first year at Uni, we had a first team player, a #6, who put on 10 kg over a 2 week christmas break, so it can be done!
He didn't need 8 weeks to do it!

It's very easy to lose fitness quickly - I've been there and done it and now struggle to keep even a modicum of fitness. But, as munster30 says, I juggle a day job, a two-hour commute and a family life. And I'm inherently lazy..!
But he's a professional athlete. In the "off season" he should still be sensible. He doesn't need to be quite so strict and should take the opportunity not to have to train so intensively. But have any of you seen professional athletes on "holiday"? I have. They get up early, go to the gym or for a run, then relax for the rest of the day. They eat and drink reasonably sensibly, knowing that they're back to is pretty soon and it'll hurt more if they're unfit.
And to those who think that this should have been kept behind closed doors, perhaps it was. But if Weepu hasn't heeded the subtler approaches, perhaps he will now he's been "named and shamed". And he should be ashamed.

you certainly gave weepu a good slam there kevin - a bit like when you and your mate umaga slammed brian o'driscoll headfirst into the turf

A bit of a media sensationalist article here, I listened to the radio and the writers are blowing up what Mealamu said, listen for yourself
Mealamu is far from berating Weepu simply giving an honest assessment, no doubt Weepu is over weight and therefore not up to fitness
Posted 15:26 11th April 2012
munster30 says...
I totally agree with Mealamu. I cannot understand how professional athletes in any sport can be overweight or unfit. I consider it a real two fingers to the fans. Fans like me who would do anything to be in their positions. And they can't even get themselves out of the pub and down to the gym to keep themselves fit!
I mean this is his job and he is not doing the only thing he really has to work at! He obviously has loads of natural ability the only part he struggles with is his weight.
If ordinary joe bloggs can keep themselves fit while juggling day jobs this clown has no excuse.
Well done Mealamu!!!

There's something not quite right here.
Piri must have been pretty fit on Nov 20 (the day of the WC final.) They've been playing now for 10 weeks, (3 friendlies and 7 super matches) That takes it back to the beginning of Feb. Surely Piri could get fit in 10 weeks.
And how unfit could he get from Nov 21 to the end of January?

Lay off England! None of our players looked unfit in the 6 Nations this year. In fact it was fitness and defence that served us so well and meant we did better than expected. You'll see a new England in the coming years.
Please when you come to England you'll get a chance to play Weepu in the front row against the best proponents of scrummaging in world rugby!

Nothing wrong with honesty, but berating other team mates to the media is a self-destructive act, i.e ROG, Cardiff blues etc., etc.
