Bulls: Keep play-off hopes alive

The Bulls beat a determined Waratahs outfit 23-17 at Loftus Versfeld on Friday to continue their late surge in Super Rugby and keep their play-off hopes alive.

The two tries to one victory sees the defending champions leapfrog the Waratahs into fifth spot on the ladder, while the visitors salvaged a losing bonus point in what was a rather bruising encounter.

It could have gone either way, and the Waratahs threatened to deny their hosts at the death after another deceptive attack from man-of-the-match Kurtley Beale. But the Bulls held on for a vital win, which could spell the end of the injury-hit Waratahs' campaign.

The visitors' casualty list will have a few more players added to it after this match, after losing prop Benn Robinson as well as his replacement Paddy Ryan during the course of the match.

It meant uncontested scrums, which proved to be a blessing in disguise for the Waratahs who managed to bag a try to Atieli Pakalani as a result which gave them a glimmer of hope after cutting the Bulls' lead down to six with 20 minutes remaining.

Beale made it a three-point ball game with his fourth successful penalty soon after. However, the match took a turn for the worst for the Waratahs after losing replacement forward Pat O'Connor in the 67th minute to a red card for "head-butting".

It was a controversial call by the touch judge, and a costly one for the Waratahs after Bulls pivot Morne Steyn added futher salt to the Australians' wounds by converting the ensuing penalty to restore a six-point lead.

And that's how it stayed...

The key area where the Bulls won the match was in defence as the visiting side enjoyed the lions' share of possession throughout the contest.

Although the 'Tahs will be hugely disappointed in the result, they fought to the very last minute and did not back down in the physical battle they faced on the night.

After surviving close encounters with Bulls' flyer Bjorn Basson who came within inches of scoring from a turnover in the opening stages, the Waratahs picked up the first points of the match courtesy of a Beale penalty.

The men from Pretoria eventually managed to open their account through a Steyn three-pointer, but were still doing most of the tackling.

Beale converted another penalty to give his side a 6-3 lead and at that stage the Bulls were finding it particularly difficult to deal with Waratahs flank Chris Alcock's presence at the breakdown.

Waratahs hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau was just as busy in the contact situations where both sides competed as if their lives depended on turning over possession.

Two moments late in the first half, however, seemed to shift momentum in favour of the Bulls. First scrum-half Francois Hougaard made a telling tackle on Alcock before Steyn landed a monster hit on Beale in midfield.

Steyn then nailed a penalty to draw the scores level in the 33rd minute.

The first-half highlight came just as the visitors thought they were in the clear. Wing Gerhard van den Heever burst though before sending centre Wynand Olivier over for a five-pointer on the half-time buzzer.

The Bulls picked up where they left off after the break when, after coming so close the first time, Basson was not going to make a hash of his second attempt and finished a counter-attack from the hosts' own tryline with precision.

With this try he equalled the Bulls' record of nine tries in a Super Rugby tournament held by Springbok speedster Bryan Habana.

Apart from another penalty exchange by the respective kickers, only Pakalani managed to trouble the scorers when he ran in the softest of tries in an otherwise brutal battle.

I was not judging the referee.. What I was saying was that the decision was poor.. be it advice from the linesman or the ref's decision alone. In other words the collective. In an incident like the one that O'Connor was sent off for surely the TMO could be used. You could argue his sending off might have had an influence on the outcome of the game. No I dont have a crystal ball and the time taken out of the game would not have been much longer than the ref and linesman's consultation. Another incident of foul play from a swinging arm resulted in a player getting knocked out and the offender getting away scot free during the game. Ok he was cited and banned afterwards but his action resulted in no penalty for his team if you get my drift, With O'connor the decision was wrong and his team might be said to have suffered as a result.. and he was cleared afterwards. These guys must know with the amount of cameras its difficult to hide. The biggest penalties are red and yellow card which penalises not only the player but the team as well.. A ban afterwards is nowhere near as big a sanction.

In my humble opinion a smaller Aussie conference would raise the profile of Australian union by being more successfull surely? You only have to see the crowds at Newlands for the Stormers past two years to see this. A few years ago the attendances were really poor. Thats why I think its cash genearation.. Or if I were a conspiracy theorist a way of knackering Southern hemisphere teams to create a more level playing field for the Northern hemisphere in the world cup.. Look at the Crusaders. Beginning of the season I thought just give them the cup and let the rest fight it out. Now their position is dodgy. A loss to the Blues next week and they are in real trouble. I wont rule them out they are too full of quality players.

@spliffed disagree about the red carding. If a referee sees a headbutt or is informed there was a head butt he must act and the red card was justified. Joubert whom I consider to be a very good referee had no option on the advice of his assistant to red card O'Connor. That the report, not the dismissa,l was deemed to be incorrect is not Joubert's fault.

The reason we have the conference system is to prop up Australian rugby who struggle against AFL and League over here. Both South Africa and NZ have strong domestic competitions Australia does not. In fact O"Neill on returning as CEO from Soccer cancelled the fledging one after one year, on the grounds of finance. The simple reason we have 6 instead of 4 was the the Waratahs choked year after year either in making the finals or getting into a final. The other reason was to allow more games in Australia between local teams to help raise the profile of rugby due to a lack of a genuine local rugby competition like those in South Africa and NZ.

I agree with you though that next week's games between the Bulls and Stormers and Crusaders and Blues will be two very important games. I would have added the Waratahs- Highlanders games but since the bye and Jamie Joseph's utterance the Highlanders have been playing like schoolboys and have lost the edge they had approaching the end of the qualifying round. However it will remain to see whether he can lift his charges against an injury ravaged Waratahs or he will forever have to keep his mouth shut. Another possible game could be the Force and the Reds but I dont see the Reds playiong as badly as they did against a team at the foot of the ladder otherwise the Reds might take the schoolboy tag off the Highlanders. Depending on what happens we will see some interesting results and we will go into the last round still not knowing the final makeup of the six.

Poor decison to send O'Connor off. At worst a warning to cool it a bit. Reds lost confirming my suspicion this conference thing of playing derbies home and away is a nonsense. Seems Brumbies have woken up.. or are the Reds not quite what their position seems? Cant understand why 5th and 6th place should have another bite at the cherry (money spinners aside). Crusaders have a win or bust game against the Blues. Could be a hell of a game as well as Stormers vs Bulls. Waratahs flattered the Bulls so will be intersting to see what happens there. Go Stormers

An ugly win, but a win.... now, come on cheetahs!

As predicted the Waratahs choked once again at the important end of the programme however they may have one chance left should the Cheetahs beat the Sharks in their game tonight. The Highlanders have had their chance to be well ahead of the Waratahs but the schoolboy efforts they have produced have not given anyone but their diehard supporters the thought of a win against the injury ravaged Waratahs. However they have their chance next week against the most hated team in Super Rugby but all may be in vain should the Sharks pull off a win against the Cheetahs.

My support lies with S.A but I try to watch rugby objectively. I can;t help but feel for the waratahs. They had a bigger want and were the dominant team for the majority of the match.

If the Bulls continue to play like they did yesterday I'll be surprised if they make it into the top six. And if they do they won;t get any further.

Spies was one of my favs when he first pitched up... now he's a waste of muscle and pace.

I love it! If an Australian match official makes a blunder these pages a full of indignant South Africans and Kiwis demanding that destruction of that official's career. Where are they now? The head but send off was a game changing error. I think of Marks, Goddard and others who were crucified and never given a chance to establish themselves. The double standards are breathtaking.
