Ireland hold off South Africa

Ireland claimed a hat-trick of wins over South Africa with a well-deserved 15-10 victory in an enthralling Test match in Dublin on Saturday.

In an international match built up to the highest of standards, the 80 minutes played in the blinding mist at Croke Park was as tough and physical as you would expect from these two rugby heavyweights.

There was no love lost between the Six Nations and Tri-Nations champions, as both sides threw everything at each other. But it was the South Africans that were left to do the dirty dishes afterwards, after succumbing to their fourth defeat on tour.

Ireland refused to be bullied by the brutal Boks and tackled their way to a well-earned victory over the world champions, who head back home with their reputation taking a small knock backwards.

Having led 10-6 at the break, South Africa were kept scoreless in the second half and watched helplessly as Irish fly-half Jonathan Sexton slotted over three match-winning penalties to seal the deal for his country.

The visitors had a chance to end their tour on a high in the final act of the game, but just could not bring to bear the necessary energy and team-work as they stumbled to another defeat on European soil.

In bitterly cold conditions, South Africa defended bravely but continued to lose badly in the possession and territory stakes. The Springboks tried hard to pull it out of the fire with a try, but just did not have the depth or variation to break through.

Surprisingly, it was at the line-out that the Springboks struggled. The influence of Ireland assistant coach Gert Smal, who just two years ago was working with John Smit and Victor Matfield, was patent as the Irish disrupted the Bok feed regularly.

If not for the Boks' dominance in other areas and the visitors' heroic defence, Ireland may have led at half-time. But Sexton landed five of his seven kicks to justify his selection ahead of record scorer Ronan O'Gara, that completed an unbeaten month for the Six Nations champions.

The Springboks, who last won in the Emerald Isle in 2000, scored the only try of the game through flanker Schalk Burger. Although the Irish struggled to get a try of their own, their pressure on the green and gold attack was enough to keep Sexton potting over the necessary points.

South Africa can consider themselves lucky to have kept fifteen men on the field for the entire game as their discipline crumbled under pressure, gifting Ireland two thirds of possession and three quarters of the territory.

Sexton's counterpart, Morne Steyn, missed several kicks in his most hesitant performance of the season and gave away a crucial 48th-minute penalty with a high tackle to make it 9-10 to the hosts.

Lock Andries Bekker was then lucky to stay on the field when he dropped his knee and forearm on Ireland hooker Jerry Flannery. Sexton struck the resulting penalty to put Ireland 12-10 in front.

South Africa's other second row, Victor Matfield, was then called for not releasing on the ground after a turnover and Sexton kicked Ireland into its winning five-point lead. Game, set and match!

The injury-hit Springboks were hit by the late withdrawal of influential lock Bakkies Botha because of a back injury. Bekker stepped up from the bench, where there was no specialist second row cover, but there was little evidence of fatigue amid a frantic opening.

Although Sexton drew first blood for the Irish with a penalty, one had the impression that the Boks had the measure of the home side and would push on to victory.

This view was confirmed when the tourists scored a well-worked try in the fifteenth minute as centre Jaque Fourie popped the ball up to Burger crashing through on a straight line to score. Steyn converted Burger's try and slotted a drop goal to extend the visitors' lead to 10-3 after 24 minutes.

But the scoreline didn't tell the story.

South Africa resisted a couple of Irish surges thanks to the defensive feats of Burger, Danie Rossouw and Wynand Olivier. Heinrich Brussow also obliged with some steals off his own line. Ireland coach Declan Kidney must have been fuming, while the South African coaches would have been breathing a collective sigh of relief.

However the little errors and lack of discipline were seeping into the play of the Springboks as assuredly as the fog was making their fingers numb with cold.

Sexton kicked his second penalty for Ireland in the 29th minute but missed opportunities, poor discipline and decision making by South Africa - which would account for eventual defeat - were starting to mount.

Steyn squandered six points by missing two long range kicks in the closing minutes of the first half. Another penalty was conceded at the scrum and once again the Bok number ten missed the kick, though it was a third penalty that tested his range to the limit.

Ireland's scrum encountered further problems but they restored morale with two Sexton penalties that nudged them 12-10 ahead. Winger Keith Earls was bundled into touch in the left corner by Steyn and JP Pietersen as the Irish began to dictate things again with ball in hand.

Gordon D'Arcy, on as a replacement for the injured Paddy Wallace, and young flanker Sean O'Brien, who came on for Stephen Ferris, added their ball-carrying abilities as the men in white began to pour forward.

South Africa, wilting beneath the relentless pressure, conceded another penalty but this time Sexton missed. The Leinster pivot made it 15-10 in the 65th minute and, in truth, it might have been worse for the Boks because the Irish kicker pushed two other attempts.

The Bok management sent on Ruan Pienaar in a clear signal that the decision had made to go over to carrying the ball but instead he continued to hoof the ball away.

South Africa managed to launch one final do-or-die assault that saw Tendai Mtawarira rampage down the right wing, but Ireland doggedly defended their line - their efforts summed up by Brian O'Driscoll's crucial last-minute tackle on Zane Kirchner.

It was a Test the Boks could, and probably should have won but in the end they just did not have the gumption to coax anything more out of tired legs and tired minds.

Man of the match: Continuing where he left off on the Lions tour, Rob Kearney was assured throughout under the Springboks' high balls and showed just why he is rated as one of the best full-backs in world rugby.

Moment of the match: In an absorbing encounter, it was a shame the only try was supplied by Bok flanker Schalk Burger. The man the Irish love to boo after the infamous eye-gouging incident hoofed the ball into the crowd after grounding the try.

Villian of the match: The fog!

~The Boks will still be number 2 in 2010 so don't panic(Ireland don't have the luxury of playing the #1 rank 3-5 times a year to prop up their rank !)....meanwhile Aus,France and Ireland will fight it out for 3rd place in 2010....may the best coach win :) Who will coach SA after Smithy leaves ? oh yeah you can still pretend that PVD does that.

~I admit the two Irish commentators were a joke...we have much better than these one sided jokers..they shouldn't be allowed comment on an under 12s game.

~Others have bashed Irish Hospitality.....that's probably the biggest stretch I've heard ....when has an Irish person ever turned down a party..even the losses are good craic.

~NZ to win the 2010 3N as physicality & a simple kicking game will not be enough for SA to win next year......unless you find 2 more Bakies Bothas(is possible). You need to be weened off Morne's kicking to win matches as not every game will be played at altitude or in sunny OZ.

...you need to get an education on the stats. Try watching rugby outside your little world or it may get rocked ! 3 out of 3 for Ireland V RSA and yes we beat everyone in rugby this year bar NZ as we did not play them(drew with Aus as it was our start to season).I notice RSA did not beat France unlike Ireland.

Yes SA is the real deal(break down, scrum, lineout); however Ireland is the one country in NHemi that has had RSAs number for a time now...Stats don't lie 3 out of 3. Ireland to a degree play the same simple rugby as SA where huge physicality(Farmland) and passion abound.Creativity seperates the two nations.SA gave away 5 penalties in the last quarter for holding onto the ball(the only thing that could save a couple of definite trys..watch the footage again)Morne saved your boys in overtime against the B&I Lions....pity Ireland didn't have more players on that team.......you would think your coaching staff would have learned not to kick to Kearney from these tests :)

~You say check your silverware cabinets to an Irish fan ???.....you really are a fool ..........> Ireland.....Grand Slam Champs,6 Nations,Triple crown. European Champs(Leinster),Celtic League Champs(Munster),Churchill Cup .Beat Argentina,RSA,France and all other teams in 2009...unbeaten for one calendar year. Drew only with Aus on first match of season.2009 IRB Coach of the year.O Driscoll should have taken the IRB player award or at least Matfield,Roussea or your scrum half. Before this SA V Ireland game I rated Rousseau as the best wing forward in the world in 2009....I still do even though Ireland completely nullified him.Victor looked sheepish without his partner.

~Boknigh......go out and buy a satelite dish...unless you like surprises every year everytime France & Ireland keep beating you.

@Eion, Don't short change yourself or the great Irish team with this "Ireland didn't beat a full strength SA team.." Nonsense! Like all teams we were down a few players....but you beat the Boks at their best (Jacobs out, Chilliboy out)....the game just goes to show how thin is the margin between the top 5 or 6 teams. I look forward to seeing Ireland in the top 3 and i look forward to seeing them in the RWC final (losing to the Boks, of course...:)

Boksmashoffice....I honestly believe that BOD is probably the best player EVER to play the game.He didn't do a whole load against the Boks but as far as not having anyone coming through that is just rubbish. Meanwhile a certain world cup winning centre playing in Ireland are struggling week in week out in Magners league matches. I'd worry about my own team if I were you.

Well done Irish and Boks. Good on the Boks for a great year and the well deserved team of the year and good on Ireland for finally stepping up and stepping out of the dark ages of rugby. Also thanks to all the good sports on this page. Bokke and Na Gael, it makes me happy that rugby is my favored sport of choice :) I know sometimes its hard to lose and even harder to win graciously.

Trinats....thanks for the sentiments on the Wally character....I knew you guys were better than that. Congrats on a great display against Wales to end the year.Scotland was a once off !

In terms of the number 3 spot in World rugby I may have to accept Aus for consistency.France are devastating when in form and Ireland are becoming harder to beat....both these teams still need to show consistency. All three teams are transitioning in younger players so it may come down to coaching staff to instill the mental strenght X factor. Don't be surprised if 3,4 & 5 IRB rankings switch between these teams monthly. We will see who has the best coaching staff pre World Cup.

@Stellenbosched, I am very surprised, disappointed and somewhat sceptical to hear that feedback. Anyway to talk about the game, rather than the petty insults doing the rounds - Ireland didn't beat a full strength SA team, there was an obvious difference between the SA team who played in the tri-nations and against the Lions, but screw it, we'll take it! If nothing else, we've confirmed a replacement for O'Gara, and although he had a very tough time against an excellent Australian and SA scrum - we have a contender for the front row in Healy. He learnt some tough lessons, but it will stand to him. Seeing the depth of players coming through is a much bigger deal to me than the result.

@Wallaroo - don't know why I am even wasting my time referring to your childish posts, but just remember this: better to keep quiet and have some people think you an idiot, rather than opening your mouth and having everybody know it.

It always amazes me how us rugby fans consistently argue on all of these things.

Neway, i think you SH fans sometimes get the wrong end of the stick when it comes to us irish fans reaction. All we want is the same amount of respect you would demand yourself when we do win. None of this "we deserved to win", "we were missing this player" or "it wasnt dat big a game for us". I think we just demand the respect when we win the six nations and beat south africa and draw with australia. Not too much to ask. Just not to be treated as if we are an inferior NH team.

As a Bok supporter we never enjoy losing, but if you're going to lose it may as well be to a deserving Irish 15, played hard, played fair, played well.

The Irish have a great reputation worldwide, humour, friendliness and a balanced perspective are all Irish characteristics. However the balance went badly missing in the Irish commentary duet. It seemed every Bok kick was "ruining the game" and the Boks were only able to "bludgeon", where Ireland played positive rugby and always looked to run the ball. Just a friendly reminder to the biased duet that the Irish DID NOT SCORE A TRY, winning with the boot alone, wheras the Boks scored a try that would have had the commentators falling over themselves had their glittering Irish boys achieved it.

Pity we can't substitute commentators at half time.

jmanngod: If the Boks are a one trick pony and they are now ranked 2nd in the world what does it say for the teams below them? Ireland will never maintain a ranking higher than SA. Get used to playing second fiddle and enjoy the win because as always it is short lived.

The Springbok and Blue Bulls silverware cabinets are full, check yours!!

Apologies for Wally comments, very un-Australian. Obviously spent too long in England on his working holiday and has been infected by the pommy whinge.

I would like to say every time I have visited Ireland they have welcomed us with open arms. They have to be the most hospitable rugby nation, closely followed by the Arggies. Maybe we should have a top ten list. I known there is one country that wouldn't make it, just on personal experience, (tests and super 14).

PadraigFitzpat: (couple too many Murphys ???, well deserved though) I'll think you'll find Australia are ranked 3 in the world, even with our young side..

So here I am, just to prove that if you dish it out you must be able to take it. The Boks were beaten by a better side on the day. To the Irish rugby players and coaching staff I offer warm congratulations. To the Irish supporters this is a time to be really grown up and resist throwing petty insults as Trinats does. To the Irish media and pr representatives I feel you have a lot of work to do when it comes to welcoming visitors. I have had feedback that from the time the Boks landed there was a wave of insults and very un-Irish nastiness towards everything South African. This is unfortunate as we try very hard to make visitors to SA feel welcome.
