Losing run finally over for Italy

Luke McLean kicking penalty

Try-scorer: Luke McLean

Italy ended a painful thirteen-game losing streak on Saturday with a morale-boosting 24-6 victory over Samoa at the Stadio Del Duca.

Despite being without inspirational captain Sergio Parisse due to long-term injury, the Azzurri were a cut above their opponents with Luke McLean's score and a penalty try adding to Craig Gower, Mirco Bergamasco and Tito Tebaldi's kicks.

Nick Mallett's Italy side went into the game at Ascoli Piceno looking to pick up their first win since June 2008.

Mallett made six changes to the team which lost 32-10 to South Africa last weekend and the new line-up responded with a determined display, building a 14-6 lead by half-time

Bergamasco kicked two penalties and Gower one for the home side, while Tebaldi sent over a drop. Bergamasco also converted the penalty try.

Samoa were unable to register a score after in the second 40 minutes and to make matters worse had Henry Fa'afili sent off for a high tackle on McLean.

You're very right if more exposure got Argentina and Italy where they are it might do the same for the Island nations. I was so happy for Argentina when they beat Scotland albeit without the effort of a try but I was happy for Agentinian rugby. I often wonder how Sergio Parisee and the others feel to be on the losing side year after year but they keep at it and that's the spirit that wins games and wins tournaments, eventually.

does it get any worse than this for samoa? I thought the loss to wales could be put down to rustyness and only having a few days to prepare, but the dismal performance vs france and now this, why do they even bother? They just make good cannon fodder for the 6 nations teams they play in these november tests, i dont know maybe more involvement in tests and competitions during the year might help? Italy has steadily gotten better after it has been involved in the 6 nations, while samoa, and the other island nations have gotten worse, you only see a brief flash once in a while when a world cup comes along, but other than that nothing really.
