Aaron Mauger is in talks with Leicester regarding his future as he nears the end of his two-and-a-half year contract at the club.
His future is uncertain, with injury having hampered his time at Leicester and only 46 appearances made during the past two seasons, in which he has scored seven tries.
However, the club has also been quick to note his mentoring role to younger members of the squad and is exploring all avenues to keep him involved, while other clubs from both sides of the channel watch the situation and New Zealand's coaches consider their options for the 2011 World Cup.
"We would love Aaron Mauger to stay because he is a world- class player," said Leicester head of operations Simon Cohen to the Leicester Mercury.
"He will have a number of options available to him and we have had a number of discussions with him and his agent about the situation. Those discussions are continuing."
Mauger said he was eager merely to have the situation resolved, the day before his 29th birthday.
"I will probably know in the next three to four weeks I suppose," he said.
"There are lots of things to consider, and I am pretty keen to know one way or the other so I can concentrate on my rugby without that hanging over me.
"It is still pretty 50-50 at this stage and I can't commit either way to be honest."
