New Waratahs winger Sosene Anesi, in to cover the loss of Lote Tuqiri, is hoping for a regular start in the Sydney-based franchise in next year's Super 14.
Tuqiri moved to England to play for Leicester following his recent sacking by the Australia Rugby Union (ARU). Anesi played in the colours of the New Zealand-based Chiefs during 2009, but spent most of time on the sidelines as his team progressed to the final.
"It was quite hard with the All Blacks back and with Mils and Siti and Masaga but hopefully that will make me a stronger player for the Waratahs," Anesi told AAP.
The 28-year-old sprinter understands that it will not be easy to replace someone of the caliber of Tuqiri.
"It's going to be tough, Lote is a good player. I'm just going to be there to play my own game," Anesi said.
NSW coach Chris Hickey pointed out that this signing was not aimed at replacing like with like.
"He is a very different player to Lote and we weren't specifically looking for a Lote Tuqiri replacement," said Hickey.
"Sosene brings a lot to the game, his speed and his attacking skills and his kicking game, so when you combine him with Lachie Turner and Drew Mitchell in that back three, it's a pretty exciting combination."
Hickey will have plenty of options available to him at full back. With Turner and Mitchell poised to wear 15, it appears as though Anesi prefers the position as well.
"I like full-back more so I can see space and run the ball from the back, but I'm comfortable with the wing as well," he said.
