Kings: Will carry new confidence to next encounter with Rebels

The Kings will carry plenty of confidence with them to Melbourne when they face the Rebels following their gutsy draw with the Brumbies.

The tournament newcomers fought back with a try three minutes after the full-time siren to share the spoils (28-28) in Canberra last Friday.

Number eight Cornell du Preez plunged over for his second try to cap a fighting comeback from the Port Elizabeth-based Kings to deny the Brumbies a victory in a spirited backs-to-the-wall performance.

The Kings capitalised on their out-of-sorts hosts to outscore the competition leaders four tries to two with only Christian Lealiifano's goalkicking keeping the Brumbies ahead into the final moments.

The Kings now have one win and one draw from the first six games of their debut season. And captain Andries Strauss praised his team for showing a never-say-die attitude in the Aussie capital.

"We are a team who pride ourselves in our defence and fronting up to whoever we play against," he said Strauss. "We were a bit disappointed at the start of the game, we gave away too many penalties and we allowed the Brumbies to play in our half.

"But all credit to the boys, they fought back in the last 10 minutes and we got out with a few points."

The Kings' committed defence frustrated the Brumbies, who dominated the rucks and mauls 110-59 and possession 62-38 percent, but could not break free of the indomitable South Africans after leading 13-0 in the opening 17 minutes.

"It's a bit frustrating and not for the last couple of minutes, right from the start it was a tough to watch," said Brumbies coach Jake White. "We missed two kicks right at the start, we were 13-nill up then missed two conversions and gave them a sniff.

"I don't think we played like that because we thought we were going to win, all week I've been saying that the only ones who are thinking like that are the media. It's irrelevant to how we were thinking.

"They are a fairly typical South African side, very big forwards and a good quality goal kicker and we just gave them too many chances to come and get us."
