Scott Higginbotham

Unlucky: Scott Higginbotham

Rebels loose forward Scott Higginbotham will undergo full shoulder reconstruction and miss the remainder of the season.

The injury is a hammer blow to both Higginbotham and the Wallabies, with the 26-year-old one of the form players in Super Rugby this season and was considered a definite starter for Australia when they face the Lions.

The 23-capped Wallaby dislocated his shoulder while making a tackle against the Reds last week and almost immediately got up and made his way off the pitch before the medics could reach him, with full knowledge that the injury was a serious one.

The Australian medical staff waited until Monday to take scans of the injury in order to give the inflammation time to settle, and the results have not come back with positive news.

The scans revealed that Higginbotham has suffered extensive ligament damage and will require a full reconstruction. He will return to Melbourne to undergo surgery and is not expected back out on the park until the start of next year's Super Rugby season.
