Stirling Mortlock: Former Rebels leader joins off-field ranks in 2013

The Rebels confirmed that Stirling Mortlock, who retired at the end of last season, will be part of the coaching panel under head coach Damien Hill.

He will also have an active role in the club's commercial team.

Three other former Wallabies and ex-Rebels players - Adam Freier, Sam Cordingley and Al Campbell - have also taken backroom jobs with the franchise.

Freier becomes general manager of communications and media, Cordingley will be involved in the club's recruitment, while Campbell will be part of the Rebels' player mentoring program.

"I am really excited about staying involved at the Rebels next season," said Mortlock.

"It will give me the opportunity to stay connected with the on field team, assisting the coaching staff and players. The role also enables me to be part of the longevity of rugby here in Victoria, helping out in the marketing side of the club."

Yes, I am glad he is staying in the game and not just going in to the media.

He has been a thorn in the side of New Zealand over the years, but you have to respect such a capable and intelligent player -- a great player, in fact. The Rebels have done well to secure his services.

The man is pure class and broker Kiwi hearts on more than one occasion.

Happy he is staying involved in Oz footy; God knows that they need the help what with that Kiwi for a coach...I can see this guy in the national setup at some point down the line...

Seems like a good place for him. He still is a leader even though his legs don't move as fast as they used to.
